The Directorate of Collegiate Education was carved out of the erstwhile Directorate of Public Instruction in the year 1965 with a view to administer exclusively the Collegiate Education Tamil Nadu enjoys the privilege of being one of the most developed states in the Country in the field of Higher Education 27 Universities are functioning in Tamilnadu and of these 12 Universities are getting their Block Grants from the Government of Tamilnadu through the Directorate of Collegiate Education

SCHOLARSHIP SCHEMES
1) Tamilnadu Agricultural Labourers Farmers (Social Security & Welfare) Scheme 2006
This Scholarship is given to the farmer's children studying UG & PG courses in Colleges in Tamilnadu. There is no income ceiling limit. But the students should not avail any other scholarship.

2) R. I. M. C. Dehradun
This Scholarship is given to the students belonging to Tamilnadu State studying in Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dehradun. Amount of Scholarship: Rs. 1000/- per month.

3) Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
This Scholarship is given to the students doing M.Phil or Ph.D., in Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The candidate should belong to Tamilnadu.
a) RS.800/- per month for first 2 years
b) Rs.1000/-per month for remaining 2 years
c) Contingency RS.3000/- per annum.

4) Defense Personnel Scholarship
This is given to the children of defense personnel. Tuition fees, special fees etc. are sanctioned by the Principals of respective Colleges. Book allowance of Rs.215/-(UG Course) and RS.500/- (PG Course) for the entire course and hostel maintenance allowance @ Rs.40/- for ten months in a year are sanctioned in this Directorate

5) Ex-Servicemen’s Scholarship
This is given to the Children of ex-service personnel.
Amount of Scholarship as in Serial No.5 above.

6) Deceased Government Servants Scholarship
This is given to the children of deceased Government servants who die in harness.
Tuition fees and admissible items of special fees upto U.G. level are sanctioned by the Principals of respective Govt. / Govt. Aided Arts and Science Colleges. Hostel fee for eligible candidates in U.G. Courses are sanctioned in this Directorate.

7) Secondary Grade Teachers Children Scholarship
This Scholarship is given to the Children of Secondary Grade Teachers working in Government Recognized Primary and Middle Schools for pursuing M.A., M.Sc., M.Com., M.Ed., ML, M.C.A., M.Phil courses in Tamilnadu. There is no income ceiling limit, but the students should have secured not less than 60% marks in the U.G. Courses. Selection is made on the merit basis.
Amount of Scholarship
Day scholar - Rs. 120/- per month
Hosteller - Rs. 300/- per month

8) Ph.D. Scholarship
The Ph.D. Scholars who wish to avail the Scholarship Scheme must have the following eligibilities
1) The Students must be full time Ph.D. research scholar either First year, Second year or Third year in anyone of the Government or Govt. Aided Arts & Science Colleges. (The scholar with M.Phil. qualification must be a student of 1st or IInd year of Ph. D. Course)
2) They must have secured 60% marks in P.G. Degree.
3) They should not be in receipt of any other Scholarship
4) Part time Ph.D. Research Scholars are not eligible.
5) An amount of RS.3000/- per month will be given to 60 research scholars who are selected under this scheme. Selection is made on merit basis.

9) B.C., M.B.C., and S.C. Scholarships
B.C., M.B.C / D.N.C., and SC/ST scholarships are given to the eligible students studying in Govt. and Govt. Aided Arts and Science Colleges and Colleges of Education in Tamilnadu by the respective welfare departments through the college Principals.

10 State Collegiate Scholarship
This is given to the students undergoing UG & PG courses in Govt./Govt. Aided Arts and Science Colleges
Income Ceiling Rs.12000/- per annum
Rate of Scholarship:
U.G./P.G. Courses = Rs.270/- p.a.
Oriental Courses = Rs.135/- p.a
