[b]Edit [/b]: Notice how counsel can be uncountable, i.e. Counsel for the defendant not Counsels for the defendant but you can also say he is senior counsel senior representative, usually barrister Lawyer is countable so you would say The lawyers for the defendant.
[b]Further edit [/b]: You would never use counsel to describe someones job. "He is a lawyer/barrister" but not He is counsel - this is used to describe what someone is doing in a trial not to describe their profession generally.
