To ensure that all Company vessels are covered against risks to hull and machinery and for war risks by identified hull underwriters and that of protection and indemnity risks are covered by identified P and I Clubs. The objective is to ensure that payment of premiums is carried out timely and receipts for claims and refunds are correctly made. Apart from being responsible for insurance and P&I matters of our fleet and liaising with Technical and Legal Department to negotiate and settle cargo, freight, hull and machinery, third party claims and insurance claims. Additionally, I am fully responsible for obtaining vessels trading licenses from Directorate General of Shipping.
[b]Job Responsibilities [/b]: (Insurance & Claims + Operations functions of LPG vessels)
- To inform P & I/H & M regarding deviations/STS operations and other issues to have them notified/survey matters etc.
- All H & M matters (from renewals to handling claims)
- All P & I matters (from renewals to handling claims).
- All DG Shipping matters such as obtaining Trading Licenses, BBCD, BBC & T/C approvals.

- Notifying, following up, finalizing and recovery of claims and related expenditure with Hull and Machinery underwriters, Protection and Indemnity clubs or Average adjusters.
- Ensuring that there is suitable follow-up with concerned parties where a claim is pending on account of non-availability of required documentation or other specified evidence or action.
- Maintaining premium and claims statistics for vessels owned, operated or managed by the Company. 
- Maintaining list of vessels whose insurance matters are handled together with their full particulars.
- Maintaining records of Hull and Machinery, War Risks and Protection and Indemnity club premium details and due dates of payment of these with the progress of payments.
- Records of H & M insurance policies and War risk insurance policies for Company vessels and Club certificates of entry and rule books and list of Correspondents.
- Yearly records created during the entry/renewal of H & M and P & I covers of vessels showing the premium and claims statistics.
- Records of any accidents, illness or injury attracting insurance cover containing details of expenses incurred, to be incurred, evidences thereof and progress made in the process of claims recovery until fullest possible recovery is made.
- Documenting information relating to latest developments in the Insurance practices as notified by H & M, War Risks and P & I Underwriters. 
- Maintaining list of outstanding claims detailing the documents receivable and the progress in the receipt of them.
[b]Achievements [/b]:
Within six months of joining the company was able to recover reimbursement of outstanding claims with concerned H&M insurers and P&I Associations for all the pending claim matters of the company till 2007. Approximately claims amounting to USD. 226,966/- recovered from P&I Clubs and USD. 450,000/- plus recovered from H&M Underwriters.
Apart from handling insurance and claims related matters of a fleet of around 45 owned vessels which includes bulkers, tankers, mini bulk carriers, tugs, multiutility vessels, rigs and dredgers of the company. I was also entrusted with claims management support to other group companies viz., Essar Logistics Limited, Essar Steel Limited, Essar Bulk Terminal Limited and Vadinar Oil Terminal who were actively chartering vessel’s for carrying groups own captive cargo purposes as well as to provide third party Logistics.

Joined as a Management Trainee and had undergone training in shipping agency department, documentation (Export & Import), Marketing and especially in the claims department in Mumbai. Self had been promoted to the post of executive within 3 months of joining the company. Worked as a claims handler in the P&I Division (CLAIMS) and also took part in the Vessel Agency division and was in charge of (Documentation and Operation) Import Consignment of Bulkhaul ISO Tank Containers at Chennai office.
[b]Job Responsibilities [/b]:
- Handling cargo claims, compensation and legal matters.
- Reporting to overseas Principals such as P&I Clubs, Vessel Owners etc., and exchanging various operational correspondences providing potential settlement advises.
- Liaising with Surveyors, Lawyers, Steamer agents, Port, Customs and other relevant authorities as and when necessary.
- Registering a claim with the club after having checked the P&I entry of the vessel on which the claim has been lodged.
- Respond to the claimants; repudiate or negotiate the claims on behalf of the members of the club.
- Reply to the Customs Show Cause Notice if issued to the vessel agents for alleged non-fulfillment of Customs regulations. Have been regularly responding to Customs Show cause in accordance with the provisions of section 116 of the customs Act.

[b]The key responsibilities handling independently at Kolkata and Mumbai are as follows [/b]:
- To pursue the claims on behalf of the owners and charterers who have the P&I entry with the club the company represented in India.
- To appoint Surveyors and solicitors, liaison with them continuously.
- Analyze the nature and type of the claim lodged by the cargo receivers locally with the vessel agents, examining all the relevant documentation associated with the particular claim and advise the club accordingly for handling the claim in suitable manner.
- To handle claims (in the nature of fines, penalties for non-compliance of the local customs regulations) imposed upon the vessel agents by the quasi-judicial authorities.
