The cosmology instrumentation laboratory (http://mcgillcosmology.ca) builds cutting edge telescope instruments that are deployed to the most remote corners of the earth, aboard stratospheric balloons, and space satellites. Our goal is to build the instruments that will allow us to measure and understand the origin and fate of the universe. Our technology includes cutting edge GHz electronics and digital signal processing, cryogenic superconducting analog circuits, and microwave detectors and receivers.

We are seeking an ambitious postdoctoral researcher to nominate for a Quebec Government PBEEE fellowship within our group. The individual would contribute firmware algorithms and implementations to our team. This researcher will be an expert with digital signal processing algorithms/technology and their implementation in firmware. We use the Xilinx line of FPGAs and software suite. Knowledge and experience with digital down convertion, digital filters, digital waveform synthesis, fast fourier transforms, noise and nonlinearities, embedded soft-processors (Microblaze), Embedded Linux, and microwave communications would be a strong asset. The willingness to learn new techniques and conquer new applications as part of a multi-disciplinary team is a requirement.

The researcher will be responsible for the development of various digital readout and real time processing systems implemented with hardware and FPGAs. He/She will oversee the design, implementation, integration and testing of components and systems, will provide technical support to, and interact with, graduate students, postdocs, and scientists.

The McGill Cosmology Instrumentation Lab is a vibrant research center for astrophysics research in Canada. McGill University is one of Canada's foremost research universities.

Bourses d'excellence pour étudiants étrangers (PBEEE)- Québec PBEEE - Quebec Merit Fellowships for foreign students 2009-2010

PROGRAM SUMMARY:

On behalf of the Ministère de l'Education, du Loisir et du Sport (MELS), the Fonds Québécois de la recherche sur la nature et les technologies (FQRNT) announced on February 18, 2009 the launch of a new program within the Quebec Merit Fellowships for Foreign Doctoral Students, Postdocs and Visiting Researchers. Under this initiative, the MELS is committed to improve the program excellence awards for students by adding fellowship reserved for students and researchers from Brazil, China, India and Mexico. These scholarships aimed at students and researchers from all sectors of research (health, humanities, arts and humanities, natural sciences and engineering).


The program is by University nomination only. Each Quebec university is entitled to nominate four (4) candidates in each of three categories per country in March 2009 for the 2009-2010 academic year. The final selection will be made by a central FQRNT committee.


For the V1 (Doctoral) category, you may nominate eligible applicants for admission (2009-2010) as well as current students early in their doctoral program.



Due to the short notice GPS requires that departments submit Intent to Nominate Form (see attached) by Tuesday March 3, 2009. In the event that GPS receives more nominations per country than what FQRNT has allotted then nominees will be required to submit pre-selection applications, the application will be evaluated and pre-selected by a central GPS committee for recommendation to FQRNT.


Categories, value and duration:

V1 – Doctoral Students: $25,000 per year for up to 3 years, with possibility of extension for 12 months at a reduced amount;

V2 – Postdoctoral Scholars: $35,000 per year for 1 year, non-renewable;


Reminders:
V2 – Postdoctoral Scholars: Research must be conducted in a university other than the university where the PhD was granted.


These awards will continue to be offered for 2010-2011, with application deadlines coinciding with the regular 2010-2011 competition.
