Continuously variable transmission (CVT) is the system that makes it possible to vary progressively the transmission ratio. So it allows selection number of ratio, between minimum and maximum value.
Ratcheting CVT’s vary the stroke of reciprocating motion, which is connected to a free wheel (uni-directional clutch) resulting in uni-directional rotation. It improves the efficiency as it allows the engine to operate always in its optimum RPM whatever the vehicle speed is.
