DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ( Head Nurse- OR )
Provides effective leadership in assigned area and responsibilities
- Conducts all aspects of supervision in a firm, fair and consistent manner
- Provides direction and guidance to Nursing staff in the delivery of patient care.
- Delegates responsibility to appropriate staff member
- Plans, develops and implements a system of patient care delivery appropriate to the Unit needs and the patient population served
- Collaborates with Medical staff and the Multi-disciplinary Care Team in developing the plan of care for patients.
- Continually evaluates the morale of staff and takes appropriate action to resolve problems when indicated
- Develops and implements Policies and Procedures that guide and support the provision of Patient Care Services

- Receiving the patient kindly to reduce or eliminate anxiety if existing
- Protection of the patient personal, moral and legal rights begins at the time of admission by maintaining privacy and confidentiality
- Make sure that we are receiving the right patient ( confirmed by the identification band, verbal response of the patient and compare with the file, file number, consent form, and the physician)
- Make sure that the consent form is signed by the patient or any authorized person.
- Ensure the site, side of operation must be verified by the nurse and the patient and match the medical record.
- Check the investigations in the patients file ( lab results, X- rays films, medical reports) and inform the concerned persons about my abnormal findings
- Make sure that the patient is fasting.
- Confirm with the pre operative checklist and the patient that he/she is free from accessories ( dentures, contact lenses, glasses, hairs clips etc….)
- Check the skin preparation
- Check for any allergy status
- Apply side rails, locking devices, safety straps on the stretcher and OR table.
- Position the patient Safely.
- Proper Use of pressure reducing bedding to prevent pressure ulcers and maintain skin integrity.
- Ensure that all the medications and IV fluids used for the patient are labeled with date, time and initials
- Sponges, instruments, sharps count must be taken before starting up the procedure ( count must be loudly as the scrub Nurse touches each item)
- Proper documentation of the instrument and sponge count is done in the intra operative record.
- Strict compliance to the recommendations of the infection control policy.
- Ensure that the patient will be discharged form the recovery room provided that the patient has been examined and declared fit for discharge from RR by the anesthetist.
- Professional use of clinical documentation (pre, intra, post)
Staff Safety
- Proper use of body mechanics to protect staff from injury while lifting the patient or heavy objects.
- Proper use of equipment to prevent injury, burns from autoclaves, electrical, electrical equipment, cuts from knifes and blades or needle sticks
- Proper use of protection measures like eye goggles, plastic aprons whenever potential blood or body fluids contact is exist.
- Wear appropriate protective equipment when X-ray machine is in use ( lead aprons, thyroid shields)
- Proper sharps disposal in special containers to protect OR users ( nurses, doctors, cleaners)
