Title : “Partially melted zone in Aluminum-Lithium Alloys”.
Abstract : Partially melted zone (PMZ) of aluminum alloy welds is an important region and requires careful attention. This is mainly because PMZ in these materials is weak link in the weldments and is significantly affected welding parameters. Microstructure changes in PMZ are related not only to welding heat input and techniques but also depend on the initial thermal history of alloy. Interestingly not many detailed studies are available in this respect.
In the present work, effect of welding processes on PMZ of Al-Li alloy was studied. Gas-Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Electron Beam Welding (EBW) and Friction Welding were used. Micro structural and micro hardness studies indicated that PMZ problem is severe in continuous current GTAW and is absent in Friction Welding.
