FINAL YEAR PROJECT :
TITLE :
Stress Analysis of a Transport Aircraft Wing Bottom Skin Panel With Landing Gear Cutout in
Bangalore Aircraft Industries [BAIL] INDIA PVT LTD.
ABOUT THE PROJECT :
Objective :
The objective of this project is to ensure the structural safety of the aircraft wing from static and fatigue loading point of view through analytical approach by carrying out stress analysis and calculation of fatigue life to crack initiation.
Abstract :
This project addresses the issue of identification of highest tensile stress location in a typical wing of Transport aircraft. To start with this requires the stress analysis of a wing under critical load distribution that the airframe is going to be subjected to. This identifies the location of high tensile stress which is the potential location for fatigue crack initiation.
For this project we select the location in the wing where there is a stress concentration. A panel consisting of integral stiffeners and landing gear cutout is considered. Few- iterations are carried out to accurately predict the highest tensile stress location.
Prediction of life to fatigue crack initiation from the highest tensile stress location will be carried out.
Brief description :
Airplanes require landing gear for taxiing, takeoff, and landing. To accommodate the landing gear a cutout is provided in the aircraft wing. These cut outs will introduce stress concentration regions in the wing. The stress concentration regions are the probable locations for fatigue crack initiation. The identification of such fatigue crack initiation locations and carrying out the calculation of fatigue life to crack initiation is important to ensure the safety of the structure. This project work is focused on stress analysis of a panel consisting of landing gear cut out and calculation of fatigue life to crack initiation in the panel.
Methodology :
Finite element analysis methodology is used for stress analysis. This is one of the numerical methods of solving structural problems. The aircraft wing landing gear cutout panel is modeled using FEM technique. The analysis is carried out to identify the maximum stress and the location of maximum tensile stress. The refinement of the mesh size is carried out to get mesh independent stress value at critical location.
Fatigue life to crack initiation is carried out at the maximum stress location. S-N curve for the panel material is used for the fatigue life prediction
Accessories used :
The general purpose stress analysis software packages MSC Patran and MSC Nastran are used for stress analysis.
