Safety Officer Recruitment :
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore invites applications from candidates for the positions of Senior Safety Officer (one position) and Safety Officers (two positions) on contract.
The eligibility criteria for the positions are as follows:
Eligibility Criteria:
(1) First class B.E/B. Tech. degree from a recognised University/Institution in any discipline
(2) P. G. Diploma in safety management from a recognized University/Institution.
(3) A minimum of three years of relevant experience in safety management is required for the posts of Safety Officer.
(4) A minimum of five years of relevant experience in safety management is required for the post of Senior Safety Officer.
Age limit: 50 years or below as on 01-12-2017.
Monthly Emoluments:
(i) The monthly emoluments for the post of Senior Safety Officer is expected to be in the range of Rs. 50,000–70,000 per month. Emoluments are negotiable in deserving cases.
(ii) The monthly emoluments for the post of Safety Officer is expected to be in the range of Rs. 35,000–50,000 per month. Emoluments are negotiable in deserving cases.
Job description:
The Senior Safety Officer and the two Safety Officers will be part of the core safety management team at the institute which will be headed by the Institute’s Safety committee. Primary responsibilities of the safety officers include the following:
(a) Develop and document Chemical, Fire, Electrical, Civil and other general safety protocols at the institute.
(b) Organize periodic safety training and enabling students to understand the principles and applications of general safety issues.
(c) Assist Health and Safety Manager/Scientist in-charge with periodic safety inspections to assess safety conformity of various laboratories within the institute.
(d) Suggest corrective actions if any after the inspection, follow-up and help the laboratories in implementing the suggested corrective actions.
(e) Assist in the development of a centralized safety portal (website) for the entire institute which would serve as a repository for safety education, training and documentation.
(f) Develop guidelines for emergency preparedness and streamline emergency response with regards to Fire, Chemical, Electrical, Civil and Health related related accidents/emergencies.
(g) Develop safety guidelines and educate students and researchers with respect to radiation and laser safety.
(h) Assist in the development of a centralized chemical inventory databasewith storage and usage laboratory information.
(i) Provide/maintain material safety data sheets for all stored chemicals.
(j) Develop chemical-class labels and ensure chemical segregation according to chemical compatibility/class.
(k) Verify chemical labelling and compatibility of chemicals stored at labs and central stores. Ensure incompatible chemicals are stored separtely.
(l) Maintain and manage gas cylinder stock, distribution, storage and use.
(m) Organize regular safety training meetings/workshops to educate students and researchers on chemical hygiene and hazard programs
(n) Develop guidelines and procedures for disposal of chemical waste and waste treatment
In addition to the above, the responsibilities of the Senior Safety Officer will include the following:
(o) Assist in the implementation of general safety in the institute which includes safety measures during any civil work such as construction/building repair/demolition work/laying high tension electrical cables/laying water lines. Ensure that the work is being carried out as per the protocols/procedures and the regulations recommended/set by concerned governmental authorities.
(p) Provide periodic presentations and submit reports with statitstics about the status of safety infrastructure, safety practices and their effectiveness at the institute to the Institute’s safety committee.
(q) Liaison with concerned authorities for ensuring complete compliance with governmental regulations with regards to safety in the workplace and protection of the environment through prevention of environmental pollution.

The appointment shall initially be for a period of 2 years (first year is probationary), extendable depending on the progress of the work. It may be noted that the appointment is purely temporary and the candidate shall not carry any right to seek regular employment after completion of the term.
