SECTION - A :
1. Answer any two of the following questions : 20 × 2 = 40
a) Write a critical essay on the development of Anglo-Saxon prose.
b) What picture of contemporary sociocultural life do you get from your reading of Chaucer’s Prologue to the Canterbury Tales ? Discuss.
c) Assess the extent and importance of the French influence on the English language.
d) Analyse the particular features of Shakespeare’s use of the English language.
2. Answer any three of the following questions : 10 × 3 = 30
a) Can Beowulf be called an epic ? Discuss.
b) Discuss the three categories of the Middle English Romance.
c) Discuss the effect of the Latin influence on English grammar and syntax.
d) Show how the Bible has influenced the English language.
e) Analyse and comment on the medieval morality play.
f) Comment on the use of irony and humour in the portrayal of the Wife of Bath.
3. Answer any two of the following questions : 5 × 2 = 10
a) How did the name ‘England’ come into being ?

7. Identify and explain any three of the figures of speech in any one of the following passages : 5
