Admission to the IISER Kolkata Ph.D. Program for the Spring Semester 2015

Applications are invited from motivated candidates having M.Sc/MS/M.Tech/MVSc degree (with minimum 55% marks) in

1. Any branch of biological sciences to pursue research in the broad fields of cellular & molecular biology, developmental biology, structural biology, plant molecular biology, behavioral biology and ecology, marine biology, neurobiology, biodiversity, microbiology, biophysics, bioinformatics, biotechnology and theoretical biology. OR
2. Chemistry / physics / statistics / mathematics / computer application / computer science / engineering to pursue research in the interdisciplinary research areas as specified in the table below
Interdisciplinary Research Area | Preferred background of the student from other areas :
Gene Regulatory Networks using NGS approaches and stress genomics - Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Statistics, Computer Application, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics
Structural biology: including but not limited to Cryo-Electron Microscopy, Image processing, Molecular Modeling, Molecular Dynamics Simulations etc. - Biophysics/Physics, Computer Science, Chemistry
Neurophysiology, Neurocomputation and Systems Biology - Physics, Computer Science, Electronic or Electrical Engineering, Biophysics, Mathematics and Neuroscience
Drug discovery, fluorophore development and biotechnology - Biophysics/Physics, Computer Science, Chemistry

Candidates having a valid fellowship like UGC/CSIR-NET JRF, DBT-JRF, ICMR-JRF, INSPIRE or other equivalent fellowships are strongly encouraged to apply.

Candidates having qualified prestigious national level examinations like JGEEBILS, GATE and NET-LS OR outstanding candidates with Masters degree only may also apply for IISER Kolkata Institute Fellowship available under the following faculty members provided they fulfill the specific eligibility criteria mentioned below:

Dr. Shree P. Pandey:
a) Minimum Essential Qualification: Masters Degree with minimum 55% marks in Biotechnology, Bioinformatics or equivalent and research experience (as demonstrated by successful completion of a research project) in a lab is essential.
b) Desirable Qualification:
(i) 6 or more months of research experience in Molecular Biology/Analytical Chemistry/Bioinformatics/Genomics lab is desired at the time of starting PhD. Experience with phytohormone signaling, wheat stress biology, and proficiency with handling HPLC/GC-MS/LC-MS or similar analytical instrumentation is strongly desirable, or
(ii) experience with handling NGS data and experience in computing and programming for biological system that may be demonstrated in form of successful projects is also encouraged.

Dr. Amirul Islam Mallick:
a) Minimum Essential Qualification: Masters Degree (or equivalent) with minimum 55% marks in Biotechnology/Immunology/Molecular Biology or MVSc in relevant subjects.
b) Desirable Qualification: Laboratory experience in cellular immunology and molecular biology would be useful. The candidate is expected to work in the area of developing novel vaccine delivery strategy against diseases of mucosal origin.

Dr. Sukant Khurana:
a) Minimum Essential Qualification:
a) Masters Degree with minimum 55% marks in any branch of natural sciences and mathematics
b) Desirable Qualification: Research interest, experience and preferably publication record in any one of the following areas; Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Animal behavior, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering and Theoretical Biology.

Dr. Robert J. Chandran:
a) Minimum Essential Qualifications: Masters Degree with minimum 55% marks in any branch of biological science or earth science.
Candidates interested in
(i) plant physiological ecology (photosynthesis, plant-water relations, stress tolerance)
(ii) landscape ecology (GIS/RS)
(iii) plant phylogenetics and community ecology
(iv) biogeochemical cycles (carbon dynamics in tropical forests) are encouraged to apply.

Dr. Malancha Ta:
a) Minimum Essential Qualification: Masters Degree with minimum 55% marks in any branch of biology e.g. Genetics, Physiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or Microbiology
b) Desirable qualification: experience in cell culture. The candidate is expected to work in the area of stem cell biology.

Dr. Rituparna Sinha Roy:
a) Minimum Essential Qualification: Masters Degree with minimum 55% marks in Biotechnology/Microbiology/Biophysics/Biochemistry and B.Sc (Hons) in Microbiology/ Biotechnology and research experience in a lab is essential.
b) Desirable Qualification:
(i) Chemistry as pass subject
(ii) research experience in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Chemical Biology is desired at the time of starting PhD.

Dr. Partha Pratim Datta:
a) Minimum Essential Qualification: M.Sc. degree with minimum 55% marks in Biotechnology/Biophysics/Biochemistry/Microbiology or related subjects,
b) Desirable Qualification: Preference will be given to candidates who have qualified national level exams like GATE, NET-LS, JGEEBILS, etc. Laboratory experience in the area of molecular biology, structural biology and computation will be a plus. Good knowledge in chemistry, physics and mathematics is also desirable.

* Please note that fulfilling the minimum essential criteria does not ensure that a candidate will be called for the interview. Additional shortlisting criteria might be set by the department based on academic records, experience and research interest of the candidates.

4. You must complete your application, incomplete application will be rejected.

5. Applicants should save the properly filled application form and take the printout after you finish and bring the signed copy at the time of interview if you are shortlisted.

6. Download the Recommendation Letter, bring this document at the time of interview. Recommendation should be in a sealed envelop.

Documents required :
Selected candidates for test/interview should bring a hard copy of application along with the required documents listed below at the time of test/interview:
Attested copies of mark sheets and certificates of all examinations starting from high school leaving certificate, two letters of recommendation (in sealed envelopes), photo identity and proof of age.

Selection procedure:
List of shortlisted candidates (based on merit, subject specialization and required research area) for interview will be published in the IISER-Kolkata website.
The Institute will not provide any TA/DA or accommodation for attending the interview.
The selected candidates will receive the offer letter containing also the last date for joining shortly after the interview.

Course Work and Laboratory rotation:
The Research fellows may have to do course work and laboratory rotations during first semester depending on which Department they join. The course content will be decided by the Department concerned for each student according to his / her need.
