POSTER COMPETITION FOR STUDENTS ON “HOME SAFETY & LOCAL PREPAREDNESS FOR DISASTER RISK REDUCTION”
DISASTER REDUCTION DAY OCTOBER 8, 2014

India is prone to various natural and human- induced disasters which have serious repercussions at household level and are aggravated due to lack of safety concerns and preparedness at local levels. Home safety refers to the awareness and education on risk and potential dangers in and around houses. which may cause harm, injury, or death to those residing in and around there physical structure of a house. Home safety also includes mitigation or prevention of such dangers through preventive measures and local organizational effectiveness for risk reduction and emergency response. Promotion of “Home Safety plans & Local Preparedness for disaster risk reduction “necessitates the need to create awareness in the whole society particularly school students so that the risk of these disasters can be minimized.

National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), New Delhi, constituted under the Disaster Management act 2005, is apex National Institute of Government of India with the nodal responsibilities for human resources development, capacity building, training, research, documentation, public awareness and policy advocacy in disaster management.

The United Nation’ (UN) International Day for Disaster Reduction is being observed every year to raise awareness among people for taking action to reduce their risk to disasters. It also encourages the people and government to participate in building more resilient communities and nations. National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) will observe the day on 08th of October, 2014 using it as an opportunity to focus national attention on important issue of “Home safety & Local preparedness”.

To create the awareness among students, poster making competition will be organized in schools across the country. Posters on “Home safety and Local Preparedness for Disaster Risk management” with an objective to create awareness among students ,teachers and other stake holders about the needs of home safety and their local level preparedness , are invited under two categories;
(i) Class VI to X
(ii) Class XI to XII
The size of the posters will be 15” x 20”. The posters will be made on white paper with water or crayon colours.

The Poster making activity will be conducted at the respective schools and top three selected entries of each of the competitions may be communicated to NIDM under the signature of the Head of the Institution by 22nd of September 2014. Out of the received entries, First prize of Rs. 10,000, Second prize of Rs. 7,000, Third of Rs. 5,000 and five consolation prizes of Rs. 1,000 each will be awarded to the winners along with certificates.

How to Apply :
i) Form can be downloaded from the website.

ii) The top 3 selected posters by each school may be sent to NIDM for consideration by the award committee before due date, duly signed by principle /Head of the school along with full address /name of the contact person ,phone number ,e-mail etc. on back side of the posters. Posters should be sent to the address given below by 22nd of September 2014
