Onsite Assignments :-
- Deputed to Voith Hydro Holding Gmbh & Co KG, Germany, from June 2009 till March 2010 for working on Hydraulic application and Transient calculations.
1. Role in the assignment :
- Worked as “Hydraulic application Engineer” for “Bhasmey hydroelectric power project” of M/s GATI Ltd.
- The project comprised 2 units each of 30.4 MW output coupled to synchronous generator with 375 rpm speed and having a rated net head of 107.5 m.
- As an application engineer my role included checking and confirmation of all hydraulic parameters, making right selection of turbine with regard to efficiency, setting , cavitation criteria, part load operation limits, coating issues, seal geometry and homologous model availability.
- After the selection was made the same was discussed with engineering competence center and a Hydraulic datasheet comprising efficiency levels at different operating regimes was furnished.
- Once the Hydraulic application was completed, Transient studies were performed to predict implicit hydraulic phenomenon resulting from sudden changes in the flow conditions and its manifestation as pressure rise and speed rise. The water conductor system was studied in detail and calculations were carried out for various wicket gate closing/opening, selected mode time & rate for wicket gate opening/closing. Finally the most optimum closing/opening pattern was selected so that pressure rise and speed rise were kept within allowable limits.
- This study was carried out by using well known interactive software tool ‘SIMSEN’. This program, is a modular simulation software for the analysis of energy conversion systems, which determines the hydraulic state variables in the water conductor system at the machine in the time domain.
- Attended seminar on SIMSEN software used for transient calculations of Hydro Power Plants.
Professional Experience at Voith :-
Responsibilities :
1) Offer to Order engineering activities for small and large hydro projects.
- Study of tender specifications provided by customer / consultant.
- Checking basic input parameters like operating head range, power or flow, water way geometry details, water level in the reservoirs, speed and pressure rise values for every individual project for performing hydraulic application and transient calculations.
- Seeking clarifications from customer for missing hydraulic parameters.
- Preparation of other possible alternative solutions (e.g. speed and type of machine).and discussion with the customer
- Study of amendments/clarifications issued by customer and accordingly incorporating in final turbine selection.
2) Hydraulic Application.
- Hydraulic Application is performed to achieve best possible efficiencies with due consideration in setting, speed and size of the machine to have a good techno-economical solution.
- The chosen solution is discussed with engineering competence center, Germany for final approval.
3) Transient Calculation.
- Water way configuration is checked to limit values of speed rise, pressure rise/drop, surgeshaftoverflow (if applicable) to prescribed values in the specification by varying the closing time values and moment of inertia.
- Technical Documentation.
- Involves preparation of Hydraulic datasheet, prototype hill chart, cavitation guarantees, guaranteed technical particulars, Transient calculation report for customer.
- Preparation of risk sheet for internal approval from management board, technical write-up for turbine and valves.
5) Supporting Activities.
- Effective coordination with marketing and engineering teams.
- Providing interface details to generator engineering, BOPM and plant engineering on time for finalization of Power house layout.
- Providing technical clarifications to post bid queries raised by customer.
- Coordination with global small hydro product development center.
- Assisting marketing and sales towards timely preparation of budgetary proposals.
- Bid preparation activities.
- Organizing Design review meetings.
6) Carried out the above responsibilities on the following projects.

Responsibilities :
- Involved in the selection and sizing of all vertical & horizontal type turbines up to range of 25 MW viz Francis, Pelton and Kaplan and predicting their Hydraulic performance using available model hill charts.
- Performed Hydraulic transient calculations
- Prepared Performance curves for various types of pumps.
- Prepared Operation and Maintenance manual for special purpose pump known as CANNED MOTOR PUMP which are used in nuclear applications.

Masters Thesis :-
Synopsis :
“Experimental and numerical Investigations on differential pressure devices” carried at Fluid Power Laboratory of Mechanical Engg Department,
“Indian Institute of Technology”(IIT), Mumbai, INDIA.
Responsibilities :
- Studied literature available on Orifice meters and Conical flow meters.
- Prepared experimental test rig.
- Supported manufacturing group for manufacture of orifice meters and conical flow meters for different cone angles.
- Performed experiments for different cone angles by varying upstream and downstream disturbances.
- Reynolds number of the flow ranged from 1e5 to 5e5.Water was used as the working medium.
- Compared performance of orifice meter and conical flow meter by measuring coefficient of discharge, irrecoverable pressure drop, velocity profiles on the upstream and downstream.
- The experimental results were then compared with numerical results using the commercial software package “FLUENT”.
- The model was created and meshed in Gambit.
- Experimental results matched the Numerical results by ±5%.
