Title of PhD thesis : Effects of Vitamin E on cold Water Swimming Stress Induced
Lipid Profile in Albino Rats.
The stress encountered by Albino rats from the environment due to pollution and
very hot or very cold climates. During thermal stress the thermo-regulatory system
maintains core temperature within the desirable range. Too cold climate leads to
generation of free radicals and other toxic metabolites which attack and damage key biomolecules
including lipid, protein & DNA, destroying their structure and making their
function ineffective. Thus stress response is induced. The amount of body fat is
significant in determining tolerance to cold when exposed, the metabolic response of
body fat. Fat acts as an insulator. It is possible to use exercise, meditation, hypnosis,
cognitive restructuring, consultants, bio feed back mechanisms for relaxation of stress.
Yet in the modern society where lack of time is the major factor, the supplementation of
drugs and vitamin therapy have become common. That is why we designed the study to
take up an antioxidant vitamin E role in combating cold-water swimming stress and its
effects on the lipid profile, heat shock proteins, behavioral changes, morphological
changes and antioxidant enzyme status. We obtained the result from our study that
vitamin E prevented the alteration in LDL and HDL levels and reduced atherogenic index.
In LPO the levels become normal in 60 days in vitamin E treated stressed animals.
Vitamin E prevents free radical changes in brain. In morphological study, the vitamin E
has vital role, to bring it to the normal by the stress-induced alterations. In behavioral
studies vitamin E treated stressed animals showed normal grooming, open field activity
and after 20 days, showed the altered T-maze activity. Therefore, we conclude that
vitamin E supplementation can offer protection against stress induced by coldwater
swimming.
