In accounting, why is the auditing function called "auditing and assurance"? couldn't we just say "auditing"? What's the significance of having both words? Isnt 'assurance' the result of an audit? The auditor makes sure that the financial statements released to the public are a true and fair representation of the actual events of the organisation, right? So after this audit procedure, the auditor gives his/her assurance that the reports are in fact truthful and not misleading etc. So since these two, ie auditing and assurance, are basically to do with the same thing... why do we still have the two words? It makes it look like its two different things?
