1. Investigation and Recommendations for Reducing the Rejections in Metal Ceramic Brake Pads
Carried out at : - Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), F&F division, Bangalore as a part of M.Sc (Engg) project.

Brief Discussion :-
For Military aircraft braking system, metal ceramic iron based brake pads are used which are produced through powder metallurgy route. After the sintering process, the hardness of this brake pad back plate was exceeding two times higher than the specification and rejected because of difficulty in machining. The high hardness of back plate will lead to increased production cost which includes high tooling cost, increased machining and labor time. An investigation has been carried out to find the various causes that lead to rejection due to high hardness. Recommendations have been given to control the hardness.
2. Design and Fabrication of Integrated Jominy end quench test setup
Carried out at : - M S RAMAIAH SCHOOL OF ADVANCED STUDIES – Bangalore, as a part of M.Sc (Engg) project
Team size : - 12 Duration: - 03 Months (Mar 2010- May 2010)
Brief Discussion :-
The project work involves the Hardenability assessment of different grades of steels through Jominy end quench. Usually the industries having jominy end set up where the heating and cooling were done separately. Since chances of quench delay, much heat loss can be happened in this system and also it is not safe. Hence to overcome from these issues, jominy end test was integrated. Here the heating and the cooling arrangements are assembled in a single chamber. It is incorporated with Time and temperature control, water flow control and a special pump that pumps different types of quenching media.
