Desert Hack 2012 National level coding competition for Undergraduates :
Starting 15th September 2012, code ninjas around the world will get their fingers moving to come up with the next big thing. These virtuosos will hack for 7 straight days and code away to glory. The glory for which countless others will contend. Presenting Desert Hack! Desert Hack is India?s colossal coding challenge at the college level, that is guaranteed to keep your adrenaline at a high for a week.

Developers compete to be at the pinnacle of technology (and of course for a lots of goodies and cash prizes) in an online hackathon presented by Blackberry and Conquest 2012. To be a part of Desert Hack you don't need to know any specific programming language or APIs, it is a level playing field where everyone is a code ninja.

Judging Criteria to be followed in Desert Hack 2012:
Each team has to submit their app/solution at the end of the coding session in the /bin directory of their respective GitHub repository. The judges would want to see a working solution with however minimal features.

The judging will be done on the following criteria :
1. The completeness of the app (UI/UX, features).
2. The business benefit of the solution and how well it solves the addressed problem.
3. The complexity of the technology involved.

All you need to know about Registration & Team Formation :
Participants have to register as a Team and a team profile page has to be maintained throughout the event. It is mandatory for each participant to have a GitHub account. Participants whose registration has not been approved will not be allowed to participate.

Participants can form teams of up to 3 during the pre-hackathon period. By 13th September 2012 the teams have to be finalized and updated on the participant profile page. A GitHub private repository for each team will be set up and read/write rights given to the members. This will be active till the completion of the event, after which the judges will go through it.

Desert Hack 101 :
** The coding period will be for 7 days.
** Participating teams have to push code to GitHub on every single day without fail; this will help us track progress.
** Participants are free to choose any platform and any idea of their own to code. However, participants will be provided with some problem statements (with specific platform/API needs) from our partnering startups. These problem statements may have an associated bounty on them (more on this in Prize section).
** Participants have to abide by any decision taken by the Desert Hack team.
** Judges decision will be final and binding.
** Desert Hack team has the right to disqualify any team found to be cheating, using prior-written code, using copyrighted material or indulging in any activity which is against the spirit of a fair hackathon.

Prizes Galore and Intellectual Property :
There will be two categories of prizes :
General Prize :
Every team by default contests for this category. The judging will be a summation of the scores of each of the judges over all the judging criteria and the prize will be awarded accordingly.

Bounty :
Some startups which provide specific problem statements will sponsor a prize for the solution to their own problem independent of the judging criteria. The amount of bounty will be revealed in the beginning, and teams competing for the bounty will have to notify the organizers before the coding session begins.

If a team produces a solution to the satisfaction of the startups, then the team gets the bounty and the startup gets to keep the rights to the solution. These problems may require knowledge of the startup specific APIs or platforms. In case a team does not contend for the Bounty prize then all the intellectual property for any submission will be retained by solely the team.
