Essay Competition for High School Students 2012 :

Theme : Space for Human Safety and Security

** Students of class 8, 9 or 10 can participate in the competition.

** Essays can be in English, Hindi or Malayalam. Three prizes in each category.

** Essays should be hand written on one side of A4 size paper and should not exceed 2000 words.

Essays should reach the following address on or before 30th September, 2012

** A certificate from the Head Master / Principal of the school and a covering letter containing full address, phone number with STD code and e-mail address (if any) must be enclosed with the essay.

** The envelope should be super scribed with 'WSW-2012 Essay Competition'.

** The Best Essay will win the GSLV Gold Medal. Prizes will be distributed at the Valedictory Function of World Space Week celebrations at Thiruvananthapuram.

About World Space Week :
World Space Week is an important international event celebrated all across the world during the week October 4-10 every year.

These two dates commemorate two important milestones in space exploration :
** 4th October being the date on which the first man made satellite, Sputnik-1 was put in orbit in 1957
** 10th October being the date on which the UN declaration for peaceful uses of outer space came into force.

World Space Week is celebrated according to a United Nations resolution since 1999.

During World Space Week, events and educational programs related to space are held globally. It fosters international cooperation in space outreach and education. It is an ideal time to motivate students during World Space Week and also for teachers to use space in the classroom to excite students about learning.

Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, the lead centre of ISRO coordinates World Space Week activities in Kerala.
