HANGER ARM
1. The yield obtained using the proposed practice is 62 % which is 7 % greater than the present yield of 55%.
2. The die stress is low in the proposed practice than in the present practice based on both simulation and empirical evaluation.
3. Die life increased by 28%. Previous it was around 2500 units. Now it is around 3200 units.


SYNCHRO CONE
1. The yield obtained using the proposed practice is 70% which is 7% greater than the present practice of 63%.
2. The die stress is low in the proposed practice than in the present practice based on both simulation and empirical evaluation. So the die damage should decrease and die life increase.

Title: “Optimization of Die Design and die life Improvement using ‘DEFORM’’

Objective: In the present scenario of competitive production, not only producing a good quality product, but making it within minimum cost with in a limited time. In case of closed die forging, the cost of dies equals to 10-15% of the overall cost of production. Further a study performed by Forging Industries Association estimated that 20-40% of the material is expended as flash, which indicates that the yield is low. This implies that considerable decrease in production cost can be achieved with the optimize die design and improvement of die life.
This can be approached by having a large body of experience with a given part and material by conducting experiments to determine the proper conditions through trail and error. It is time taken work as well as costly. In order to maintain and increase the present market for forging, it is necessary to go for computer simulation Software. “DEFORM” is such type of forging simulation software.
