    Part A
    (Answer all questions : 5 x 2 marks = 10 marks)
    1. Write a note on veractor diode.
    2. What is decibel?
    3. Explain the effect of magnetic field on critical temperature of the superconductor
    4. What do you meant by reciprocal lattice?
    5. What is the effect of interference of light in thick films ?

    (Answer any four questions : 4 x 5 marks = 20 marks)
    6. A tube 15 cm long is filled with a solution of 60 gms of sugar in 100 ml. of water. It is placed in the path of a plane polarized light. Find the angle of rotation of the plane of polarization of light if the specific rotation of sugar is 65o.
    7. X rays of wavelength 0.75 ? are reflected from the (110)plane of a rocksalt crystal ( a = 2.828 ?). Calculate the glancing angle corresponding to second order spectrum.
    8. Derive an expression for absorption coefficient.
    9. Derive the expression for Fermi energy in intrinsic semiconductors.
    10. A) The transition temperature of lead is 9.75K and the maximum magnetic field of the material is 10.5×?10?^4 A/m .What precaution to be taken to use lead as a superconductor when subjected to a magnetic field 5.75×?10?^4 A/m
    B) Calculate the current density if the diameter of the lead wire is 1.2 mm
    11. A proton is confined to a nucleus of radius 5 x 10-15 m. Calculate the minimum uncertainty in its momentum. Also calculate the minimum kinetic energy of proton.

    12. (a) Explain the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern obtained by single slit illuminated by a parallel beam of monochromatic light.

    14. (a). Explain BCS theory of superconductivity. Explain Josephson’s effect.
    OR (b). what is a tunnel diode. Explain the V-I characteristics of a tunnel diode with the help of band diagrams

    15. (a). Explain ultrasonic diffractometer. Give an experiment to determine velocity and wavelength of ultrasonic waves.

    (b). Using Schrodinger’s wave equation, derive wave function and energy of a particle in a box in one dimension.
