EN09 103 – ENGINEERING PHYSICS Time : 3hours Maximum Marks: 70
Part A (Answer all questions : 5 x 2 marks = 10 marks)

Part B (Answer any four questions : 4 x 5 marks = 20 marks)
6. A tube 15 cm long is filled with a solution of 60 gms of sugar in 100 ml. of water. It is placed in the path of a plane polarized light. Find the angle of rotation of the plane of polarization of light if the specific rotation of sugar is 65o.
7. X rays of wavelength 0.75 ? are reflected from the (110)plane of a rocksalt crystal ( a = 2.828 ?). Calculate the glancing angle corresponding to second order spectrum.
8. Derive an expression for absorption coefficient.
9. Derive the expression for Fermi energy in intrinsic semiconductors.
10. A) The transition temperature of lead is 9.75K and the maximum magnetic field of the material is 10.5×?10?^4 A/m .What precaution to be taken to use lead as a superconductor when subjected to a magnetic field 5.75×?10?^4 A/m
B) Calculate the current density if the diameter of the lead wire is 1.2 mm
11. A proton is confined to a nucleus of radius 5 x 10-15 m. Calculate the minimum uncertainty in its momentum. Also calculate the minimum kinetic energy of proton.
