    Admissions to Direct Ph.D. Programmes in Social Sciences and Women's Studies (Council for Social Development - Hyderabad)
    COUNCIL FOR SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT (CSD) - HYDERABAD (AN ICSSR RESEARCH INSTITUTE)
    CSD – Hyderabad, established in 1967, is an autonomous research institute supported by the ICSSR, which promotes interdisciplinary research, teaching, curriculum development, academic exchange and training in the broad field of social development. The academic programmes at CSD-Hyderabad aim at furthering understanding of vulnerability, marginality and the meanings of social development for communities facing poverty and loss of livelihoods; persons with disabilities; and other socially marginalized groups.

    CSD-Hyderabad announces the direct PhD Programme in Social Sciences and in Women’s Studies for the Academic Year 2012-2013 and invites applications from candidates with M.Phil in any of the social sciences wishing to pursue doctoral research.

    Admission is open to candidates with an M.Phil degree in any of the social sciences.We especially encourage applications from students interested in working on issues at the intersection of Social Sciences and Law. Other areas of expertise in CSD are dalit and adivasi studies, women’s studies, gender studies, environment, intellectual property, labour studies, rural development, disability studies, sociology and development economics.

    The CSD faculty are recognized guides of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai. Candidates selected for Ph.D will work under the supervision of faculty from CSD, Hyderabad. The admission process will be part of the TISS admissions and the PhD programme will be governed by the broad TISS rulesand award of degree will be from TISS Mumbai.

    Selected candidates are expected to complete course work conducted in modular form, agree on clear schedule for interface with research guide, fulfill the necessary requirements of the Ph.D. programme, pay fees regularly and submit progress reports.

    Application Process :
    Application Form and Prospectus can also be downloaded from the link below and sent by post to TISS, along with a Bank challan of Rs. 800/- (deposited in any branch of the State Bank of India).
    Request for Application Form and Prospectus by POST or in person may be addressed to Section Officer (DSO & Meetings) along with a Bank challan of Rs. 800/- (deposited in any branch of the State Bank of India).
    Filled in application forms with all requisite enclosures should reach the TISS on April 8, 2012.
    The Application fee is not refundable.

    Seats :
    There are five seats for direct Ph.D. in the year 2012-2013 for both streams together.

    Fellowships :
    Two selected candidates will be offered ICSSR doctoral fellowships of three-year duration @ Rs. 16000/- pm for two years with a contingency grant of Rs. 10,000 pa; and Rs. 18000 per month in the third year with a contingency grant of Rs. 20,500 pa.

    Reservation Policy :
    The reservation policy for SC, ST, OBC and PWD as per the Government of India norms will be followed.
    SC/ST candidates are required to submit a copy of their Caste and Parents’ Income (Below Rs. 1,00,000/-) Certificate for exemption of application fee of Rs. 800/-.
    Travelling Allowance (TA) is paid to all the eligible SC/ST candidates for attending Written Test and Personal Interview to be held in Mumbai. For claiming TA, candidates are required to submit original travel tickets along with filled - in TA form.

    Admission Process :
    Candidates who wish to apply for admission to direct Ph.D. in Social Sciences and Women’s Studies both to TISS, must indicate the same in their application forms along with order of preference.

    All eligible candidates who apply for direct Ph.D. Programme will be invited for the Written Test (Research Aptitude Test (RAT)) and interview to be held at TISS Mumbai on or between 1st to 4th May 2012.

    Candidates who have cleared JRF in the past two years are also expected to attend the Written Test and Personal Interview.*
    Candidates who have GATE and any other relevant scores are also expected to take the RAT.

    The model paper and rules for the Research Aptitude Test (RAT) will be put up on the TISS and CSD websites by early April 2012.
    Apart from the fulfilment of academic criteria, the short-listing of applicants for the Written Test and Personal Interviews for direct Ph. D. programme is linked to the statement of purpose/research proposal and the domain expertise available at CSD.

    The short-list will be displayed on the TISS and CSD websites by middle of April and email communications will be sent to the candidates.
    Candidates with visual impairment will have to indicate the impairment in the application form. They will be provided with a writer for the written test.

    Selection will be completed by end of May and the information will be uploaded on the TISS and CSD websites.
    Selected candidates are expected to pay fees by end of June 2012.The direct Ph.D. programme will begin from the middle of June 2012.
