This investigation provides, for the first time in Bangladesh, information on housing communication environments for 58 autistic individuals. The investigators collected history from the parents and observed through working with the autistic individuals to find the gap in the communication capabilities of the parents. From the history it was apparent that none of the parents had an effective method for communicating with the child/individual at home prior to this initial consultation. From individual intensive 1 to 1 stimulation sessions conducted it became apparent that it is possible to establish bond and trust with the child working at the floor level. Using sufficient verbal and visual preparation, the investigators could initiate interaction and interest in activities like imitation play, reading picture, story books and songs, and with sufficient visual and verbal reassurance, children would calm down when upset. Variations were found in the response to different communication approach. Autistic individuals responded to the communication and maintained interactions. This presentation will review how the creation of a communication enhancing environment at home is crucial to enhance autistic individuals’ spontaneous communication. Parents/care takers need to develop effective communication skills and approaches taking the individuals specific needs and strengths into consideration.
