PRE-OPERATIVE :
** Carbolizing the theatre one hour prior to the first case which includes the operating table, instruments layout trolley, myostand, basin stand diathermy machine, wall etc.,
** Collecting the necessary drape, basic instruments, special instruments, sutures and other things ready for the surgery.
** Following proper sterile technique in handling of drapes and other things.

INTRA OPERATIVE :
** Being a good anticipatory scrub nurse.
** Following proper sterile technique by self and correcting others (mainly the new comers or the students)
** Following neutral zone in handling of sharps.
** Talking count of sponges, gauze pieces and needles used for the surgery prior to close the wound or the abdomen.
** Safeguarding of specimen and biopsies.

POST OPERATIVE :
** Proper care of wounding dressing, wound drainage and chest drainage bottles etc., transferring the patient to recovery room.
** Ensuring the proper cleaning of operating room the self and by the cleaners in between each case in order to prevent cross infection.
** Proper labeling and appropriate preservation and safe guarding of specimen and sending it to the correct laboratory.
** Packing the instrument set and sending it for sterilization.

GENERAL DUTIES :
** Avoiding unnecessary exposure of the patient in the operating room.
** Taking precaution in preventing the patient from electrical hazard thermal injury and accident in the operating room.
** Following special precautions in biohazards cases e.g., MRSA positive, HIV positive and AU positive.,
** Maintaining the operating room free of pathogens by weekly washing, fumigation of the theater after hazardous cases like gas gangrene, tetanus etc.,
** Proper waste segregation in the operating room.
** Teaching and guiding the junior nurses and the students.
** Active participation in linen/general/instruments inventory.
** Maintaining good interpretation relationship with surgical team.
** Maintaining proper records and reports of the emergency / elective surgeries and sponge account register.
