SYLLABUS FOR THE EXAM

1. Basics of Electrical Engineering: A.C. and D.C. circuit analysis. R.L.C. series and parallel circuit, Network Theorems, Resonance, Electromagnetics, Electrostatics, Capacitances, Batteries, Cables, Work power and Energy for electrical systems.

2. Electrical Machines: Principle of operation, Construction, Working, Analysis, Testing and Applications of D.C. Machines (Series, Shunt and Compound) and A.C. Machines (Single Phase motors, three phase induction motor, Synchronous machines, Alternators, Single phase and three phase Transformers)

3. Generation Transmission and Distribution of Electric Energy: Types of power stations, Tariffs and economic aspects of power generation, Combined cycle power plant, Types of tariffs, Design and performance analysis, regulation of transmission lines, ABCD constants, Models (T-? etc.) of transmission lines. Types of Distribution systems. Power and distribution transformers, Neutral Earthing, Grounding, Power Factor Improvement, Load dispatch centre, Cascade Tripping, Islanding, PLCC, Frequency and voltage control methods for power control, Starting, loading and unloading of an alternator, Substation layouts and equipments, and Basics of H.V.D.C. Transmission.

4. Switchgear and Protection: Construction, Working principle, Types and analysis of Circuit breakers, Relays, Isolator, C.T. P.T. and Earthing Switches. Lightning arrestor, Protection of generators, motors, transformers, transmission lines, Protective schemes used in power systems, Basics of D.C. circuit breaker, Testing of Circuit Breakers.

5. Estimating, Costing and Economics of Electrical Energy: Wiring and its types, Electrical engineering materials, Illumination, types of lamps, street lighting, and design of lighting systems. Energy conservation techniques in Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution. Energy audit and Basic concepts in renewable energy sources.

6. Analog and Digital Electronics: Diodes, transistors, oscillators and 555 timer, Amplifiers, Logic gates, Flip flops, Counters Encoder, Decoder, Multiplexer De-multiplexer, A-D convertor, D-A convertors, Amplifiers and Basic fundamentals of microprocessor 8085 and its interfacing.

7. Electrical and Electronics Measurement and Measuring Instruments: Fundamentals of measurements, Potentiometers & Bridges, Electromechanical instruments, Electronic instruments, Calibrations & Testing, Data handling and Telemetering, Different types of meters used for measuring various electrical quantities and Different types of transducers.

8. Power Electronics and Electrical Drives : Switching devices, operation, working principle and analysis of converters, inverters, Choppers and Cyclo-converter, High Frequency Applications, Photo-Electric Devices, Power Supplies(UPS, SMPS, CVT, Servo Voltage Stabilizer), Drives, Electrical Heating and Welding and Electrical Traction.

9. Commissioning of Electrical Equipments : Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance of Electrical Machines/ Equipments, Trouble shooting, Electrical Accidents and Safety:

10. Computer Fundamentals : Operating systems, Basic concepts of internet and email, MS Office.
