    PROJECT
    Stress analysis using Photoelastic Polariscope
The polariscope is an instrument which can be used to observe the optical effect produced in the loaded transparent birefringent models. A quick visual examination of transparent models of the machine parts in the polarized field will tell the observer if there is any trouble some spots in the part with stress concentration due to bad design.
A basic standard Polariscope consists of a polarizer, two quarter wave plates, an analyzer and a light source. The light source is of high intensity and uniform throughout the field. The optical elements are aligned in a straight line. The light from light source passes through the polarizer, first quarter wave plate, through the thickness of the loaded double refracting transparent model, second quarter wave plate, the analyzer and finally falls on the screen. Put the transparent material under test on the setup & rotate the polarizer and analyzer together in the same direction and apply the different loads to observe the back areas or lines in the fringe pattern. By observing this fringe pattern in material we can find out the position of critical points in the specimen & design the specimen considering these critical points in mind.
    - It is used for stress and strain analysis.
    - It may be used to study the stress distribution in complicated structures and machine members.
