The Training Programme
This Institute has a well-developed infrastructure of laboratories equipped with different equipment, library and computer center, wood seasoning and preservation plants, workshops, nurseries and experimental field stations for conducting wood science and forestry research as well as training. The Institute has conducted eight training programmes of one week each for IFS officers on wide ranging topics like Intellectual Property Rights in Forestry Issues, Mangrove Conservation and Management, Advances in Wood Science and Technology and biotechnology for Forest Conservation in addition to imparting training to the officials of Naval Dockyard etc. These short term courses are tailor made for meeting the exclusive requirements of specific groups or organizations.
COURSE DETAILS
1. Instrumentation techniques for phytochemical analysis
Instrumental analysis with different chromatographic tools like GC, analytical HPLC and preparative HPLC, spectroscopic analytical methods like UV and FTIR.
2. Field Identification of important timbers
Method of identification (physical properties and internal structural features); Field Identification of 25 commercial timbers.
3. Classification and Grading of Timbers
Testing and classification of timbers for different end uses; defects in wood their measurement and evaluation; grading of logs and sawn timber.
4. Wood Protection
Importance of seasoning; equilibrium moisture content: moisture content values and tolerances for end products; influence of climatic zones on moisture content; movement, seasoning schedules, seasoning kilns (solar, steam, vacuum press drying, dehumidification drying etc.); other seasoning methods. Fundamentals of wood preservation and need for wood preservation; preservative and their properties; traditional and emerging wood preservative; analysis of preservatives in wood; operation of preservation plants; problems by fungal invaders and management; identification and control of powder post beetles; termites and their management, prevention and control of wood deteriorating fungi, susceptibility of timber to pest attack and enhancement of durability.
5. Sandal-wood :
seed handling, nursery and plantation technology Components of nursery, propagation techniques, composting, concept of root trainers based seedling production, seed technology, supplementary nutrition, bio-fertilizers, pest management in nursery and quality assessment of seedlings. (Includes one day field tour and 1/2 day field visit to KSDL)
