M.Phil. in Music I SEMESTER Section A – Research Methodology & Research Tools:
UNIT – I
What is research – characteristics of Research – Introduction to research in Music – preparation of synopsis – Hypothesis – Source – Collecting of Data – primary source – field work – questionnaire – Interviews – varities of interviews – survey – secondary sources – Statistical analysis and interpretation.
UNIT II – Areas of Research in Music:
Different Areas of research in Music – identification of areas for research – core and inter disciplinary thesis organization – preface – acknowledgement, introduction, chapterisation – notes, charts, preparation of key words – index, Appendix, Bibliography, Audio, Video and Photo Presentation.
UNIT III - Aids to Research:
Knowledge of the scripts - Tamil, Devanagiri, Roman with diacritical marks
– Information technology & Music – knowledge of operating computer, windows operation, word processing, storage of data in different format – C.D. Rome, Internet Browsing, Digital Camera usuage, Preparation of Powerpoint presentation.
Core Course – I : Theory:
Section A
I. Short Projects in Core Area:
1) Study of one raga from Sangeetha Sampradaya Pradarsini of Subbarama
Dikshitar with reference to Lakshana section and notations of composition.
2) Analysis of any 5 musical forms in the same raga with respect to structure, melody, text and sahitya.
3) Raga classification: Classification of Ragas of ancient, medieval and
modern period.
4) Art journalism including writing for media on live music concerts, to
develop writing skills and book review.
Core Course II – Practical:
I Seminar:
Notating and reproducing of a song assigned by the faculty member.
II Lecture - Demonstration:
Any one composition form of the following group kritis:
1) Ghana raga pancharatna kritis of saint Thagaraja.
2) Panchalinga sthala kritis of Muthuswamy Dikshitar.
3) Navarathri Kritis, Navaratnamalika Kritis, Navagraha Kritis and
Kamalamba Navarana Kritis.
III Detailed presentation of a Raga with reference to Evolution, History, various musical forms figuring in it, Analysis of a selected composition from the point of melodic structure – decorative pattern like Gamaka, groupings of swaras – Tala pattern like eduppu, treatment of various Dasa Pranas. Manodarma aspects of the raga – alapana, niraval and kalpana swara.
