Instructions : a) Section 1 (Basics of Civil Engineering) and Section 2 (Basics of Mechanical Engineering) are to be answered in separate answer-books.
    b) Assume suitable data wherever necessary

Section 1 : Basics of Civil Engineering
    Part A :
    (Answer all questions)
    1. What are the uses of brick as a construction material? (2 marks)
    2. What is reinforced cement concrete? (2 marks)

    Part B :
    (Answer any two questions : 2 x 5 marks = 10 marks)
    4. What is cement mortar? What are its applications?
    5. Mention the Engineering properties of concrete. Explain any one briefly.
    6. Draw the typical cross-section of a road.

    Part C :
    (Answer section (a) or section (b) of each question : 2 x 10 marks = 20 marks)
    7. a) Write short notes on engineering properties and applications of the following construction materials (i) Lateritic stone (ii) Timber and (iii) sand
    OR
    b) Write explanatory notes on the following
    (i) Bonds in brick work (ii) setting time of cement
(iii) Applications of plain cement concrete
    8. a) Sketch the plan and a suitable section of a single room having 4.0 m× 3.0 m size and 3.0 m height. Assume the basement height, floor thickness, floor finish, thickness of slab and foundation details suitably. Also assume the size and location of doors/windows (use answer paper for sketching).
    OR
    (b) In order to determine the reduced levels of three points A, B and C, the following staff readings were taken using a levelling instrument. RL of Bench mark = +100.000. Staff readings at BM= 0.850; at A= 0.900; at the change points = 1.005 and 0.950; at B= 0.940 and at C= 0.930. Determine the reduced levels of A, B and

Section 2 : Basics of Mechanical Engineering
    Part A :
    (Answer all questions)
    1. Distinguish between carburettor type and MPFI engines. (2 marks)
    2. What is meant by priming of pumps? Is it necessary to prime all types of pumps? (2 marks)
    3. State second law of thermodynamics. (1 mark)

    Part B :
    (Answer any two questions : 2 x 5 marks = 10 marks)
    4. Compare between the different forging operations.
    5. Show the relationship between power transmitted by a belt system, belt tension and coefficient of friction.
    6. Derive the air-standard efficiency of Diesel cycle.

    Part C :
    (Answer section (a) or section (b) of each question : 2 x 10 marks = 20 marks)
    7. a) How does a hydroelectric power plant work? Explain with the help of schematic diagrams.
    OR
    b) Explain the following with the help of necessary figures.
    i) Two stroke and four stroke IC engines.
    ii) Die-casting.
    iii) Shielded Metal Arc Welding
    iv) Slider crank mechanism.
    8. a) Draw the layout and explain the working of a Gas Turbine power plant.
    OR
    b) i) Explain the concept of Ton of Refrigeration and COP.
ii) A Carnot refrigeration cycle absorbs heat at 265K and rejects at 303K.
Calculate the COP of the refrigeration cycle.
If the Carnot heat pump operates between the same temperature limits
as the above cycle, what is the COP?
How many kJ/s will the heat pump deliver at 303K if it absorbs 1200
    kJ/min?
