Remarkable Charlie
Alexander Walker looks at his life and times
He was born in the slums of south London. He wore his mother’s old red tights cut down for ankle socks. He was sent to a workhouse when she was sent to the madhouse. Dickens might have created Charlie Chaplin’s childhood. But only Charlie Chaplin could have created the great comic character of “the Tramp”, whose ragged dignity, subversive mischievousness, hard-grained resilience and soft-hearted sentimentality gave his creator the dimensions of an immortal.
This month, that immortality will have the official seal that only centenary celebration can put on it. Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin was born 100 years ago on April 16, 1889, and you will not be allowed to forget it. Already, Chaplinmania has broken out in Britain. Ironical, in a way, since Britain did not altogether venerate the Little Fellow on the screen when Chaplin was alive. Thames TV has mounted a mini-series, Young Charlie Chaplin. Last month, the new Museum of the Moving Image on London’s South Bank opened a nine-part exhibition. This month, City of Lights will be shown in London with Chaplin’s original- but lost- musical score reconstructed from his notes by Carl Davis. And to come is Sir Richard Attenborough’s
projected film of Chaplin’s life.
(i) Decide which of these statements are true or false according to the article: 1x4=4
(a) Chaplin’s childhood was very poor.
(b) Chaplin was born in the USA.
(c)Sir Attenborough has reconstructed the musical score of City Lights.
(d) Britain did not quite recognise Chaplin on screen when he was alive.
(ii) Name the comic character created by Chaplin that is mentioned in the article. Why
according to the article that character is an important part of Chaplin’s life? 1+2=3
(iii) “Already, Chaplinmania has broken out in Britain.” The author of the article cites a
few instances to prove that. What are they? 3
B. Read the following passage and answer the questions below: 10
Musical Instruments
There are many different kinds of musical instruments. They are divided into three main classes according to the way that they are played. For example some instruments are played by blowing air into them. These are called wind instruments. In some of these the air is made to vibrate inside a wooden tube, and these are said to be of the wooden family. Examples of woodwind instruments are the flute, the clarinet and the bassoon. Other instruments are made of brass: the trumpet and the horn, for example. There are various other wind instruments such as mouth-organ and the bagpipes. Some instruments are played by banging or striking them. One obvious example is the drum, of which there are various kinds. Instruments like this are called percussion instruments.
The last big group of musical instruments are the ones which have strings. There are two main kinds of stringed instrument: those in which the music is made by plucking the strings, and those where the player draws a bow across the strings. Examples of the latter are the violin and the cello.
(i) Write down the class which these instruments belong to: 1x5=5
(a) clarinet (b) drum (c) flute (d) guitar (e) trumpet
(ii) What is the difference between – 2x1=2
(a) a violin and a guitar?
