FIRE ENGINEERING & SAFETY MANAGEMENT
With ever-increasing fire hazards in modern times the need for specially trained fire fighters and engineers has become indispensable. Fire hazards in today's world mean unforeseen destruction with increasing urbanization and mounting industrial activity resulting in greater use of electrical devices, appliances in all types of houses and offices, office automation, heating and cooling systems. Terrorist activities like bombing, and irresponsible deployment of inflammable substances only add to modern civilization's vulnerability to the hazards of fire very much in evidence in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in the US. In India, fire is a state subject and the states and union territories administer fire services. Each state government maintains a fire department to look after the preventive and precautionary aspects of fire safety. the ministry of home affairs renders technical advice to states/ union territories and the central ministries on fire protection, fire prevention and fire legislation. as per statistics available, more than 2,000 fire stations manned by at least 66,000 professionals are operating in the country with a fleet of around 6,500 appliances/ vehicles.

Work profile :
Fire engineers are responsible for determining causes of fire and methods of fire prevention. They conduct research and tests on fire retardants and fire safety of materials and devices. They may recommend safe methods for the storage of inflammable and other hazardous materials. Fire engineers have to use mathematical principles to assess fire risk, then apply scientific principles to fire-safety practices. in the inhibition and prevention of the onset and spread of fire, fire engineering uses management techniques. In active fire fighting and supervisory roles, a fire engineer's work is hazardous; however, administration and research spheres mean more of deskwork.

Placements :
As per the rule of the government for the private and public sector, if the workforce exceeds a specified number, the company is to appoint a fire officer who will procure the materials and devices to give direct training to the workforce of company, supervise fire fighters engaged in operation, administer law and regulation regarding the fire department and ensure maintenance of fire equipments. Fire engineers find job opening in the government fire services, architectural and building design, insurance assessment, project management, aircraft industry, refineries, industrial processing, and any area of safety where the possibility of fire or combustion represents a hazard. All major organizations that own offices or residential premises use the services of a fire engineer to ensure safety of their premises. The protective role requires a lot of safety checks, updating of equipment, conducting scheduled and surprise fire drills. Fire engineers may work as surveyors in insurance companies assessing the damage suffered by an insured party, investigating the cause of the fire, the efficacy of the fire safety devices, equipment and alarm systems. but the sad fact is that despite such an urgent requirement to devise an effective fire management system in the country, not much has been done to make fire fighting & management an integral part of the country's disaster management system. However, with increasing urbanization fire hazards have increased proportionately, and this has contributed towards an awareness to develop an effective fire management system.

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY MANAGEMENT
The industrial revolution brought with it a lot of progress. But with the progress came a lot of risks of various kinds. In order to minimize the chance of hazards, risks, injuries and accidents Industrial Safety Management is now being considered a field worth specializing in.
Industrial safety management courses in India seek to train individuals to be able to implement risk management techniques and other safety management options that will minimize the negative impacts of industrialization. The health and hygiene of the industrial work place and the monitoring of the operation systems is also part of tightening up the safety measures of the industry.
In today's times of massive industrialization and the overwhelming damage being caused by excessive industrialization and ignorance to certain key issues industrial safety management courses seem to be extremely relevant. It is a career that is materially promising and spiritually satisfying as it is a service to humanity at large.
The Indians have realized the importance of this field and its relevance to current times.

CAREER IN DISASTER MANAGEMENT
