THE MANY SCHOLARSHIP SCHEMES OF ICCR
One of the major activities of the ICCR is its scholarship programme. The ICCR annually offers about 2325 scholarships under 21 scholarship schemes. Of these scholarships, 675 are exclusively for Afghanistan and 500 for African countries. There are students in India under these schemes from about 80 countries. Most of the scholarship holders come from developing countries in Asia, Africa, South and Central America. However, there are quite a few students from the developed countries as well. Around 3550 foreign students are currently studying in India under the various scholarship schemes.
The students are in graduate, post graduate and doctoral programmes as well as in professional courses such as engineering, pharmacy, accountancy, business administration and management. Scholarships are also given for learning Indian dance, music, painting, sculpture, etc.

The ICCR administers its own scholarship schemes apart from which it also functions as an agency for other schemes on behalf of the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Finance of the Government of India.

INDIAN COUNCIL FOR CULTURAL RELATIONS
The ICCR was founded in 1950 by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, independent India’s first Education Minister. The Council helps formulate and implement policies pertaining to India’s external cultural relations, to foster mutual understanding between India and other countries and to promote cultural exchanges with other peoples.
As a tribute to the memory of the late Prime Minister Shri Jawaharlal Nehru and to his life-long dedication to the cause of world peace and international understanding, the Government of India instituted the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding in 1965.
Given annually, for outstanding contribution to the promotion of international understanding, goodwill, and friendship among peoples of the world, the Award carries Rupees 2.5 million in cash (convertible into foreign currency) and a citation. The Award may be divided between two persons who are considered by the Jury to be equally deserving of recognition in a given year.
