In 1972 IPTA held its first Inter Collegiate Drama Competition (ICDC) for one-act Hindi plays. Inspired by Shri Prithviraj Kapoor’s career as a complete theatre person, IPTA started this Drama Competition in 1972, the year of his sad demise and instituted the trophy for the Best Production in his memory. For the last 35 years we have been encouraging young talent in the field of theatre and also creating theatre awareness among college students.

The late Shri Kaifi Azmi initiated this activity and entrusted Shri Ramesh Talwar with the responsibility of evolving the mode of the competition, framing the rules and getting the whole competition organized. Mr. Talwar and his co-convenor Shri Subhash B. Dangayach brought together their collective experience of having staged plays in various college competitions. Inculcating a sense of theatre discipline in the students has also been an integral part of this competition.

* 25 - 30 participating colleges from Mumbai
* 5 - 6 days of performances
* 30 to 35 shows of one-act Hindi plays
* 700 to 1000 student participants
* About 2000 people as audience, including students and general public
* Elimination Round at Mysore Association, Matunga (E) from 10th-14th Sept 2007
* Final Round at Tejpal Auditorium, Gowalia Tank on 22nd Sept 2007
