Seminar Delivered
Biosensor
Abstract :
A biosensor is an analytical device which converts a biological response into an electrical signal .The term 'biosensor' is often used to cover sensor devices used in order to determine the concentration of substances and other parameters of biological interest even where they do not utilise a biological system directly. It is use to determine the concentration of glucose in blood, to determine the concentration of metabolites, Air and water monitoring to detect the concentration of harmful gases and substances, also use in agriculture to detect the good micro-organisms favorable for soil, drug analysis.
Academic Project
Title : “Evaluation of insecticidal and antimicrobial activities of Jatropha extracts”
Duration : 6 months
Abstract : Many higher plants are major sources of natural products as there primary metabolites and secondary metabolites. Secondary metabolites are the biomolecules that are biosynthetically derived from primary metabolites and are not essential for the growth. Functions of secondary metabolites are deterrence against predators and pathogens, attraction and deterrence against pollinators, allelopathic action etc. But in recent past discoveries of major classes of synthetic chemical insecticides have taken place of botanicals in field of agriculture due to quick action and better control of insect pest. However to avoid the environmental and heath problems, impetus for the discovery and development of alternatives of synthetic chemicals is heightened. The trend is raised to search for naturally occurring toxicants from plants which can reduce risk to human health and environmental impacts and also can be a better insecticide to control agricultural insect pest..
The present investigation deals with the screening of Jatropha curcas for the insecticidal and antimicrobial activity against plant pathogens. The plant parts were extracted with methanol and analyzed for biological activity. Significant insecticidal activity (against Plutella xylostella) was observed in the seed coat extract while antifeedent activity (against Helicoverpa armigera) was prominent in leaf extracts. Root extract was found to possess antifungal activity against Rhizoctonia bataticloa and Fusarium udum. The active extracts were further fractionated by solvent extraction and column chromatography and the fractions were also analyzed for the activity and characterized by HPTLC and FTIR.
