Resume Tips For Experienced People / Professionals
You have finished your graduation, got your job, gained a few years of valuable experience in your field of profession.
Great, you are now looking for a new job. First thing you will be doing is updating your resume. Your old CV perhaps was written when you were a fresher with no experience. The same CV will not fit your case now. The resume of an experienced person should be more professional with more content added with the rich experience that you have gained over the years.
First put yourself in the shoes of the interviewer. He is not interested in what you did in your primary school. He is not interested in what you did in your secondary school. He is most definitely not interested in what you did in your college. How great you did in your college, or how great was your professor, how great is your college does not bother the interviewer.
So what is he really bothered about?
He is bothered about what you did in the last 3 to 5 years.
If you are experienced at least 3 years, your college back ground does not help much. It helps only for your first job and becomes immaterial later on as you climb the corporate ladder.
However, as usual, most of the basics of resume writing is applicable to you.
1) Do not write in broken English.
2) Use proper punctuation.
3) Use standard font with standard size.
4) Use formatting to highlight things you want the interviewer to see.
5) Do a machine (MS word) proofread as well as human proof read. Ask your friend to check your CV.
List of things to check for: Accuracy of the facts stated, grammar, spelling, overall look and feel of the CV.
Here are some tips for preparing resume of an experienced professional:
1) List all your responsibilities and activities in your past job(s).
2) Highlight your contribution / achievement.
3) List your extra-curricular activities and hobbies.
Refrain from saying reading newspaper, magazines, watching TV, sleeping, washing, bathing, brushing tooth are your hobbies.
What do you then add as hobby?
Coin collecting, stamp collecting, trekking etc.
Most of the activities mentioned normally in the fresher CV can be termed at best as "timepass". They dont get categorized as hobbise. I do hope you get the idea.
If you do not have a writable hobby, do not list your "time pass" activities there. Remember, hobby is not a mandatory activity. Nobody gets a job for his hobby.
4) Add all the professional training you have undergone in your previous work experience. Do not add the behavioral or psychological training imparted as a part of the company training curriculum. Add only the technical part.
5) Add all the professional skills you acquired in your previous company.
I will add more when I have time.
