PROJECT TITLE : CONDENSER TUBE LEAKAGE DETECTION
PROJECT DESCRIPTION : In a thermal power plant, if there is leakage in cooling tubes of condenser, the pure condensate mixes with cooling water, which is sea water causing heavy damage to the boiler side, mainly by corroding it. The plant has to be shut down for a long time to detect leakage, identify the exact tube and repair it. Leakage is usually at the edges of cooling tubes due to corrosion, defective welding or poor finishing.
In the project steam from a boiler enters the top of condenser. Salt water is used as coolant which is circulated in and out of cooling tubes. Steam that is condensed is collected in hot well .Two collector trays are used to collect the leakage on either side of the tubes, placed just above the hot well. The leakage from the collector passes down through a pipe which MEASURES THE CONDUCTANCE using conductivity sensors. Conductivity is even measured for condensate to check for impurities. Salt water has higher conductance then pure water.
