Desikachary (an eminent Phycologist of India) Emeritus Professor(CAS in Botany, University of Madras), on Nov. 1987 and continued research work in the project till January 1990. During the period I registered for Ph.D. under the guidance of Prof. T.V. Desikachary and worked until 1995.
As a part of the project work I participated in 8 oceanographic cruises of “Sagar Sampada” a Fishery Oceanographic Research Vessel of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Cochin, to collect Phytoplankton samples. The samples were analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Nearly 10,000 light microphotographs were taken. I also took a few hundred Scanning Electron Micrographs during the study period by using a Scanning Electron Microscope (Model Japan Jeol T-330A. I was trained in critical identification of Dinophyceae, Taxonomically. I also got the experience of analyzing sea water on board (Salinity, DO2 and Chl. DETAILS OF DOCTORAL WORK
Ph.D. Thesis Title : Dinophyceae of the Bay of Bengal
My doctoral thesis work includes a floristic analysis of 477 samples, collected along the East coast of India and around the Andaman and Nicobar Islands during 1988-1990. 41 genera and 290 taxa including 18 varities, 2 forms were described and illustrated by light and scanning electron photomicrographs. A few nomenclatural changes have been made. Of these 22 taxa were new records to the Indian Ocean and one species was found to be new to science(Dinophysis indica Srinivasan). 198 taxa were recorded around Andaman and Nicobar Islands and 189 taxa were common to Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. Majority of species recorded here were armoured forms but a few unarmoured species were also described. SEM studies were made for nearly 53 taxa commonly occurring in the region.
