    Announcing Exceptional Opportunities for Faculty Positions in Indian Universities

    University Grants Commission of India invites applications from outstanding highly motivated individuals, with demonstrated flair for research and teaching, for positions of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor in areas of basic sciences, i.e. Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Engineering- and Earth Sciences. These positions have been created as part of a new Initiative designed to augment faculty resources in Indian Universities. The intent is to induct exceptional candidates with notable record of research in interdisciplinary / frontier areas of science, who will spearhead internationally competitive research programmes along with their teaching responsibilities.

    Initial appointments at each level shall be for a period of 5 years, extendible through peer evaluation by successive 5-year terms. There is provision for elevation to next higher rank following end-of-term or mid-term appraisal of those occupying the position of Assistant / Associate Professor. The positions are tenable till the age of superannuation (presently at 65 years ).

    The University Grants Commission will synergize and coordinate with Institutions under its umbrella for appropriate placement of successful candidates. The UGC-faculty will receive emoluments at par with those of the Central University appointees. In addition, facilities (such as residential accommodation, etc.), commensurate with those available to faculty of the host Institution, may be extended to them. Also, they will be entitled to competitive start-up grant for research.

    Scales of Pay :
    Professor : Rs. 37400-67000 (Pay Band - 4) with academic grade pay of Rs. 10000 (minimum starting salary at Rs. 43000).
    Associate Professor : Rs. 37400-67000 (Pay Band - 4) with academic grade pay of Rs. 9000.
    Assistant Professor : Rs. 15600-39100 (Pay Band - 3) with academic grade pay of Rs. 6000.

    Qualifications for advertised positions (Except in Engineering Sciences)

    1. Professor
    Essential qualifications :
    (i) An eminent scholar with Ph.D. degree in concerned discipline with a minimum of 10 years experience of teaching in a University / College and / or research experience at University / National level Institution / Industrial Establishment, including guidance of research at doctoral level.
    (ii) Should be actively engaged in research and have published work of high quality with a minimum of 10 publications as books and / or research papers.
    (iii) Contribution to educational innovation such as design of new curricula and courses, and technology-mediated teaching process.
    OR
    An outstanding scholar with established reputation in the relevant field, who has made significant contribution to knowledge.
    Desirable qualifications :
    (i) Evidence of national / international visibility and of independent guidance of research at doctoral / post-doctoral level.
    (ii) Sustained record of high quality research publications.

    2. Associate Professor
    Essential qualifications :
    (i) Good academic record with Ph.D. degree in concerned discipline; 55% marks or equivalent grade on a point scale, wherever grading system is followed, at the Master’s level.
    (ii) A minimum of eight years experience of teaching and/or research in a position equivalent to that of Assistant Professor in a University / College, or Accredited Research Institution / Industry, excluding the period of research for Ph.D. degree; should have guided research at doctoral level and have a minimum of 5 publications as books and / or research papers.
    (iii) Contribution to educational innovation such as design of new curricula and courses, and technology-mediated teaching process.
    Desirable qualifications :
    Evidence of independent guidance of research at doctoral level and / or independent research publications.

    3. Assistant Professor
    Essential qualifications :
    (i) Good academic record with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade, on a point scale, in Master’s degree from an Indian University, or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university.
    (ii) Should have cleared National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC / CSIR or similar test accredited by the UGC like SLET / SET. Candidates with Ph.D. degree (awarded in accordance with the UGC norms 2009) are exempted from the requirement of NET/SLET/SET.
    Desirable qualifications :
    Ph.D. degree in concerned discipline with at least one-to-two years post-doctoral research experience, and good record of research publications.

    Engineering Education , Graduate Level (1963-68)

    I was selected in ’63 for the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, with a Merit Scholarship, for the 5-year integrated course in Electrical Engg. Graduated in ’68 with First Class(Hones.) majoring in Instrumentation and Control, Electrical machines & System Components, Electrical machine design, Applied electronics , Power distribution systems, Applied Physics & Computer Technology ; apart from Electrical measurement Laboratories. Secured an “A” grade for final year project & viva-voce . Also received ‘B’ Certificate from the E.M.E. Corps of the N.C.C.
    Post-graduate Education (1968-71)
    I completed post-graduate studies at the Electrical Engineering Department at I.I.T Bombay, with Energetic-I option (Control Systems & Drives) in ’69, majoring in advanced & non-linear control systems, instrumentation, network – theory, power electronics, modern physics, machine analysis and electrical drives with 1st class marks. Subsequently , completed project work on the design of Lower –order approximations to Dual-mode minimum-time sub-optimal relay Control systems , involving analog & digital simulation (subsequently published), for which I was awarded the M.Tech (Master’s) degree.
    Research Experience (1972-75)
    In 1972, I became a research associate at the Biomedical Engineering Division of the I.I.T. Madras.In this capacity, I took formal courses in Bio-medical Instrumentation & Control, Electro- physiology, Medical sciences, Biomechanics and Bio-signal analysis, apart from setting up the first R & D laboratory in this new inter-disciplinary area.
    During this period, I was instrumental in organizing original research in E.E.G. (‘brain-waves’) analyses and Bio-feedback studies on real-life subjects – healthy, epileptics and insomniacs as well as under meditation – with the Institute of Neurology, Madras Medical College, under the guidance of Prof. T.M.Srinivasan, B.M.E./I.I.T., and the renowned neuro-surgeon Dr. B. Ramamurthy. For this work, I was awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship in 1975 for advanced research in U.K.

    Doctoral Work (1975-79)
    Proceeded to Southampton University in the U.K. in ’75 and worked in the Dept. of Electronics; till ’76, was also associated with the computerised E.E.G. analysis project at St. Bartholomews Hospital, London. Subsequently, I worked on instrumentation & computer analysis of real-time E.M.G. signals from human neuro-muscular systems under voluntary muscular contractions, guided by Dr. David Thomas. For this work, I was awarded a Ph.D. in 1979.
    Post-doctoral Research (1980-81)
    Following my return to India, I was attached to the Neuro-sciences faculty of the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences & Technology, Trivandrum, under a TATA/CSIR post-doctoral fellowship. Worked with the Neuro-sciences Department in Clinical engineering and in developing special measuring techniques to augment existing patient-care instrumentation in ICUs.
    Project Manager, KELTRON (1981-83)
    In ’81, I was inducted to start the Medical Electronics Department at the E.R.& D.C. of the Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation. Beginning from project planning and staff recruitment & training, I initiated and guided several projects on indigenous development of bio-medical transducers, measuring instrumentations and systems, particularly in cardiology and electro- physiology, apart from electronic detection devices for leprosy – as suggested by W.H.O., and specialised equipment required by the medical profession.
    Medical Systems Development Manager, PHILIPS-India (1983-84)
    For about 1-1/2 years was an executive with the Professional Electronics
    Equipment factory of Philips at Pimpri, Pune. Apart from analysing Electro-surgical diathermy units of Philips-Honeywell for indigenisation, I also underwent training at their Medical Systems Division at Best/Eindhoven for technology absorption and transfer of SDR-100 type ultrasonography diagnostic imaging systems. Supervised the manufacture & testing of the first batch of these linear portable units, for the first time in India.
    Design/Development Manager, SIEMENS-India, (1984-88)
    For 3-1/2 years, I was in charge of the R & D of the fast-developing Instrumentation & Control group (E6) of Siemens at Bombay, and later in Nasik, in conjunction with Siemens-AG, W.Germany, where I was extensively trained (Erlangen, Karlsruhe , Berlin, Amberg). I had also overseen and guided projects & indigenization in the field of transducers/transmitters, data- and signal converters, closed-loop instrumentation & systems for Process-control , as well as telecommunications. I was involved in setting up the new Electronics factory at Nasik, manpower recruitment, and training. Guided innovations in the areas of computer-based Control systems, in addition to test-software development.
    Senior Manager, Medical Equipment Division, LARSEN & TOUBRO Ltd (1988-1994)

    For over 3 years, I was in charge of the newly-formed Medical Equipment project of Larsen & Turbo at Mysore, overseeing tie-ups with British, French, Italian & German collaborators, for indegenising, developing, manufacturing & testing electro-medical equipment like bed-side patient monitoring (single & multi-parameter), central nursing stations and defibrillators, Ultrasonography

    machines- both linear and sector scanning (Kontron, UK & France) – apart from transducers, E.C.G. machines (Biocardio, Italy) and Electro-surgery equipment (Erbe, Germany).
    Thereafter, for 3-1/2 years was in charge of customer-support , factory interface and government-related interactions at Bombay; also represented L & T in trade & industry, viz. I.E.E.M.A. and C.I.I. (then C.E.I.). Also introduced new technologies in Lithotripsy and Laser treatment from Technomed of France, and development of test equipment & training of personnel in India and abroad.
    Chief-Executive, Health-Care Products Division & E.D.P. systems –
    CONCEPT Pharmaceuticals Group(1995-98)
    Re-started the Medical Electronics activity , from strategic planning & technology development to contract-manufacturing and marketing, incl. foreign agencies & technology tie-ups with British, Australian, Israeli and U.S. companies, in the field of life-saving respiratory instrumentation, trans-telephonic electrocardiography, and 'smart' bed-side monitors Also revamped the computer/EDP set-up : introduced E-mail , Internet & computer education.
    The responsibilities & activities included :
    (i) Development & Strategic planning, project management & business development
    (ii) Technology development & upgradation in Bio-medical instrumentation, indegenisation, software development, value-added engineering
    (iii) Initiating techno-commercial tie-ups with international leaders from overseas, incl. technology adoption, application & trials in the field of oximetry, capnography, cardioscopy, and stress-test systems.
