Training Ship Chanakya is a leading institution providing pre-sea training to deck side (navigation) cadets based on the outskirts of Mumbai. It is a shore based training institute fully equipped with latest teaching and training aids. T. S. Chanakya conducts two types of courses
1) 3-year degree course B.Sc.(Nautical Sciences)
2) 3- month pre-sea training course.
1) THE 3-YEAR B.Sc.(NAUTICAL SCIENCES) COURSE :
The 3-year course leads to the B.Sc.(Nautical Sciences) degree by the university of Mumbai. Those who successfully complete this course go to sea as Trainee Nautical Officers and are then exempted from the parts A, B, C and E of the Second Mate FG (Foreign Going) examination. They have to pass part D (orals) before they are granted Certificate of Competency as Second Mate of a foreign going ship.
Eligibility Criteria :
Age limit :
Applicants for this course must be less than 20 years of age as on Sept.1 of the year in which entry is sought. In case of SC/ST candidates, 5 year relaxation is permitted. Only unmarried Indian males are granted admission.
Qualification :
As per DG Shipping requirements the applicant must have passed the 12th Class ie.10+2, equivalent to A level of UK, with maths, chemistry and physics as main subjects. 1st year students of the three year bachelor courses of Indian Universities can also apply.
Physical Fitness :
The candidate must meet the physical standards set by the medical board of the Academy. However, colour blindness is treated as a major disqualification for the candidates applying for deck officers.
Reservation :
22.5 % of the total seats are reserved for the candidates belonging to SC/ST. SC/ST candidates are required to submit certificates in support.
Selection Procedure :
The selection procedure consists of a qualifying examination, which is held at 24 centers in India. A merit list of candidates based on their performance in the written test is prepared followed by an interview and medical examination.40 applicants are selected each year for the course.
Written Test :
The written test consists of papers in English, Physics, Chemistry and Maths.The papers are of 3-hour duration each and are of 100 marks each.
Interview :
The candidates also go through a personality test, which is designed to check their overall mental ability and suitability for sea-life.
Course Duration :
The B.Sc. (Nautical Science) course is of 3-yrs duration with 2 semesters in each year.
Course Fees :
The present cost (including boarding, lodging, uniforms, books etc.) is about Rs 60000/- for the entire 3-year course.
2) THE 3-MONTH PRE-SEA COURSE :
The three month pre-sea course requires the cadets to go to sea for two years.They then need to attend a compulsory course at LBS College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research (LBS CAMSAR) for 6 months and after passing the examinations are awarded Certificate of Competency as Second Mate of a Foreign Going ship. Cadets for this course are selected and sent by the respective employers ie.the shipping companies.Hence the number of cadets in each course is regulated by the actual requirement of the shipping companies.
Eligibility Criteria :
The maximum age limit of candidates applying for this course should be 20 years for those who have passed 10+2 examination with PCM subjects and 22 years for B.Sc. graduates.
Selection Procedure :
Candidates have to sit for a common qualifying examination conducted by the Merchant Marine Education and Research Trust (MMERT), which consists of Indian, and Foreign flag ships. Those possessing higher qualifications such as B.Sc. or B.E are also eligible.
Course Fees :
The fees charged for this course usually paid by the shipping companies or reimbursed to the cadets by the employers. At present the charges (including boarding, lodging, uniforms, books etc. ) are about Rs 32000/- for the entire course. 120 cadets of the 3 month course can be accomodated at a time at TS Chanakya.MMERT selects the candidates through a common selection procedure and sponsors them for the 3 month pre-sea training at not only TS Chanaky
