Dr. ASHA POORNA. C,
Email : apchundakkadu AT gmail.com
Research Experience :
1. Research Associate (CSIR) (14/1/2009 - 2012) Rajiv Gandhi Center for Biotechnology, Trivandrum, India.
“Bioactive compounds from Mangrove plants of Kerala region” Major objectives of the research project : Collection and Screening of mangrove plants for anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory anticancer and antioxidant activities, mainly focusing on low molecular weight substances with antimicrobial activity and surface-active properties. Also working aimed for the isloation of antioxidant genes.
2. Senior Research Fellow (CSIR) –
National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (formerly Regional Research Laboratory)
“Production and Characterization of endoxylanase from Bacillus pumilus using Solid State Fermentation and its application in Paper pulp processing”
Major objectives of the research project : The research project deals with isolation of potent bacterial stain Bacillus pumlus for endoxylanase production. Identification, Optimization of production by submerged and Solid-state fermentation; Purification and characterization of the enzyme performed. Also application of this crude enzyme on biobleaching of paper pulp process was performed. During the course of work various fermentation techniques as well as purification techniques were tried. The work resulted in the isolation of alkalophilic thermotolerant Bacillus pumilus that was highly productive in wheat bran medium and the purification resulted in the isolation of three isoforms active at different temperature and pH with different molecular weight. The application studies showed that the crude enzyme as such was very effective in kraft pulp processing and for recycling of paper as well as plant fiber separation. (The technology developed is transferred as a manufacturing technology to an Industry, Bangalore, India).
2. Senior Research Fellow, National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (formerly Regional Research Laboratory), Trivandrum, Kerala, India from 1/12/2000 to 1/10/2002
“Over expression, characterization and modification of endoxylanases from Bacillus SSP-34” Major objective of the research project : The research project deals with molecular tranfromation of bacterial strain Bacillus SSP- 34. The culture condition of tranfrormed strain was optimized for maximization of endoxylanase production by submerged fermentation.
3. Junior Research Fellow, National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (formerly Regional Research Laboratory) from 16/09/1997 to 30/03/1999
“Anaerobic biodegradation of 1, 4, Di -Chloro Phenol in wastewater”. Major objective of the research project : The research project deals with development of microbial consortia for the degradation chlorophenols from wastewater. Anaerobic as well as aerobic culture consortiums were developed. This microbial consortium was grown as batch cultures, in Fluidized bed reactor and in Up-Flow anaerobic reactors. Adsorption isotherm studies were also performed.
