ABSTRACT :
A simple differential protection scheme is based on the principle that any fault within electrical equipment or its protected zone would cause the current entering to be different from the current leaving it. The two currents can hence be compared in terms of their magnitudes & phases & suitable action can hence be taken for the protection of the equipment by isolating it from the faulty circuit when the difference in the two compared currents exceeds the preset pick-up value of the relay. This scheme of the transformer is also known as the "Merz-price principle". Today, there has been a tremendous development in the relays being used for transformer differential protection i.e. from electromechanical to static to numerical. Current stabilized trip characteristics, insensitivity to dc components and CT saturation, harmonic restraint, cross blocking, fault recording, waveform capture, and permissive negative sequence differential protection are some of the advantages of numerical relays over static relays. Also, these relays are more compact, reliable, reprogrammable, and flexible resulting in their improved performance over conventional relays. These features have resulted in their increased popularity & utilization in the industry.
