PROJECT TITLE
A study on cultural, physiological and antimicrobial properties of soil actinomycetes SS22.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Soil actinomycetes were isolated from soil samples collected from different regions of Tamilnadu. Among the 76 isolates obtained 17 isolates were found to posses antimicrobial activity. The isolated actinomycetes were subjected to microscopic observation and most of the isolates were found to resemble Streptomyces sp. The isolated actinomycetes were screened for anti microbial activity. The isolates that exhibited potent antimicrobial activity were further screened for antimicrobial activity against hospital pathogens. The isolate SS22 exhibited potent activity against hospital pathogens and was subjected to further study. The physiological and biochemical characterization of the active isolate (SS22) was studied on using various media’s. The antibiotic was partially purified by suitable solvent system. Further investigation have to be carried out to have better understanding of this antibiotic produced by the isolate SS22.
