OUTLINE OF THE RESEARCH WORK:
Nanotechnology is the design, characterization, production, and application of structures, devices, and systems by controlling shape and size at the nanometer scale. The synthesis and morphological control, of cuprous oxide ( ) and zinc silicate ( ) nanostructures utilizing different surfactants have been explored. It is based on solution-grown reduction-route and sol-emulsion-gel method that maintains high product yield and better chemical processability of product for many industrial applications. The correlation between the micelles of the surfactant molecules, that act as stabilizer during the growth of nanostructures, and / nanoparticles, the morphology of products could be tuned. The interactions are determined by the shape of micelles that mould the crystal structure of the nanoparticles.
The steady state photoluminescence and laser induced time resolved spectroscopic analysis provide the information regarding the energy transfer processes and fate of the excited states of the material. Fast and efficient pulsed-UV nitrogen (337 nm) and diode (374 nm) lasers has been utilized as an excitation source to excite the short lived shallow trapping states present within the forbidden gap. The photoluminescence measurement and decay kinetics of and nanoparticles were inquired as a function of dopant ions concentration and annealing temperature.
An experimental protocol has been shown to synthesize polysulfone based and nanocomposite thin films using solution-grown method. A strong dependence of optical, thermal, and electrical properties on the morphology of polysulfone and doped nanocomposite thin film samples has been observed. The grafting of polymers significantly improves the stability of composite particle dispersion and its compatibility within polymeric matrix. By controllably adjusting the doping level, conductivity anywhere between undoped (insulating or semiconducting) and doped (highly conducting) form of the polymer can be easily obtained as the presence of filler deviate the insulating properties of polysulfone to conductive phase. This permits the optimization of the best properties of polymer nanocomposites.
The development of new materials for solar energy conversion in the field of hydrogen production and degradation of organic contaminants has elicited both social and scientific concerns. Metal-oxide semiconductor based photocatalytic reactions are expected to be promising for environmental remediation. Cuprous oxide nanostructures serve as a potential candidate for photolysis reaction as it absorb the photons from the visible part of solar emission due to its small band-gap of 2.17 eV. Using AZII and TBII as the probe molecules, the size dependent photocatalytic activity of nanoparticles and polyhedrons were systematically investigated, including the effect of dosage and initial concentration of dyes.
The size dependent cytotoxicity of cuprous oxide nanoparticles of variable size on human carcinoma cell-lines have been evaluated in detail. Cytotoxic measurements provide at least a readily available early test system which suggested the prescreening of the nanoparticles as nanoparticles might be toxic to both tumor and normal cells. Such investigations on a broader set of different cell-lines combined with an understanding of the detailed molecular mechanism of nanoparticles and cell interactions, reduces the toxicity to normal tissues. Also, the size modification of nanoparticles enhances the permeability through cell-membrane to create high-permeability nanoparticle-based cancer therapeutics. So, and its derivates can be used as an independent agent and/or photo/radio-sensitizer in cancer therapies, in particular, for elimination of tumor cells otherwise resistant to a number of conventional drugs.
