ACADEMIC PROJECT
Title : ANTITHROMBOTIC ACTIVITY OF Evolvulus alsinoides.
Aim : The aim of the present study is to investigate the antithrombotic effects of ethanolic extract of Evolvulus alsinoides in mice.
Scope of the study : Thrombosis is the formation of blood clot inside a blood vessel, obstructing the flow of blood in the circulatory system. Pulmonary thromboembolism (PT) is where the blood clot from a deep vein breaks away, travels within the bloodstream, and blocks the blood supply to the lungs. The present proposed therapy for PT is with Thrombolytics, Anti coagulants and Aspirin like drugs. These drugs are intended to have many side effects. Therefore investigating a natural herb like Evolvulus alsinoides (EA) for antithrombotic activity would be helpful for PT patients.
Brief methology : The experiment is done using male Swiss albino mice. The ethanolic extract of EA is taken in 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg groups which are compared against aspirin and negative control groups. Pulmonary thromboembolism is induced in anasthetised mice with a mixture of collagen (60 µg/kg) and epinephrine (0.8 mg/kg) injected into the right jugular vein. The survivor’s percentage, bleeding time and histopathology of lungs is taken. The in vitro parameters are also assessed.
Conclusion : The 200 mg/kg group is found to have potent antithrombotic activity. The antithrombotic activity may be due to the presence of glucopyranoside derivatives in the EA ethanolic extract. Further investigations at molecular level are required to make the drug available to mankind.
