    Abstract :
    The anti tumour and anti oxidant status of the ethanolic seed extract of Adenanthera pavonina Linn. (SEAP) has been evaluated against Daltons ascitic lymphoma(DAL) in Swiss albino mice. The extract was administered at the doses of 100 & 200 mg/kg body weight per day for 14 days after 24 hrs of tumour inoculation after the last dose and 18 hrs fasting, the mice were sacrificed.
    The present study deals with effect of SEAP on the growth of tumour, life span of DAL-bearing hosts, hematological profile and bio-chemical parameters such as lipid peroxidation(LPO), glutathione content(GSH),superoxide dismutase(SOD), and catalase (CAT) activities. SEAP caused significant (P < 0.05)decrease in tumour volume, packed cell volume and viable cell count; and it prolonged the life span of DAL-tumour bearing mice.
    Hematological profile converted to more or less normal values in extract treated mice. SEAP significantly (P<0.05) decreased the levels of lipid peroxidation and significantly(P<0.05) increased the levels of GSH,FOD and CAT. Psychological studies has revealed the appearance of ruptured cell wall, damaged nucleolus and prevention of mitosis in the treated tumour cells.
    The present study sheds light on the potent anti tumour property of the seed extract of Adenanthera pavonina Linn and can be extended further to develop therapeutic protocols for treatment of cancer.
