Oil & Gas Jobs, Am I Suited?

The oil and gas industry is having to face up to an huge problem, and that problem is that people working within it are simply getting old. OK that in itself might not seem a problem, but the average age is going up as they fail to attract new people to the industry. The problem came about as a direct result of the downturn of the 80s

Because of what happened 50 is now the average age of the oil worker. What do you do? how do you attract people to what is perceived as a heavy industry. With 50 as the average, it means that there will be a lot of retirements sometime soon.

Quite unexpectedly though, university entrants have been moving towards the geo-sciences and away from the computer science courses as that industry suffers from saturation. This is the answer to the prayers of the petrochem industry.

A degree is not a prerequisite though, as there are many jobs within the oil and gas industry that can be gained without one. This includes everything from admin to site work

Those that join from a lower qualification level can be trained on the job and in the classroom, and are able to see a clear employment road in front of them.

Almost everyone has the vision of a man in oilskins drilling for oil, dirty or wet with sea water. There are so many options within the industry, such as administration, procurement, transportation, technical, as well as those drilling rig jobs.

While that is still the case for rig workers, the industry employs people in far more diverse jobs than that. Admin clerical, procurement, engineers, physicists, all are needed for the growing petrochemical industry.

people join the Oil and gas market from many different walks of life. If you are looking to make a change of career, fancy working abroad for a while etc, then get in touch with one of the recruitment sites, submit your CV, and see what turns up.
