MAJOR THESIS IN M.TECH :
A GIS BASED APPROACH FOR THE RISK ASSESSMENT OF ENDOSULFAN IN SOIL
(A CASE STUDY OF KASARGOD ENDOSULFAN TRAGEDY)
SUMMARY :
Endosulfan, a widely used organochlorine compound is an important cause of pesticide poisoning in many countries. This paper deals with the impact of endosulfan on the soil of Kasargod district. Aerial spraying of endosulfan was done in the cashew plantations owned by the Plantation Corporation of Kerala at Kasargod continuously for 24 years till it was banned in 2001 due to unusual clustering of congenital malformations and increased morbidity attributed to rampant and injudicious use of endosulfan
Soil samples are collected from some of the highly affected panchayaths of kasargod districts such as mulliyar, Padre and its nearby locations. These samples are then subjected to micro and macro nutrient, heavy metals namely cadmium, lead, zinc and pesticide(endosulfan) analysis. The results obtained from this study along with geographical control of the area is used as a basic data for the GIS based vulnerability analysis . The information derived from this study also has a special importance for assessing the extend of affected areas and will be highly useful for administrative and health sectors. This study confirms the gravity of the problem and clearly demonstrates the importance of immediate action on curbing the impact of endosulfan. Attention is given to providing a basic information for future studies in similar areas where geography and topography has major control.

PERSONAL STATEMENT
I believe in finding happiness in every moment of my life. For me, life is like a game that has to be played to the fullest and enjoyed while one is at it. But my hands-on approach, good inter-personal skills and the ability to think differently and learn quickly have helped me succeed in unfamiliar and unstructured situations. I have also learnt to take failure in its stride and learn from my mistakes rather than brood over them.
I am confident that, with my excellent analytical skills and entrepreneurial drive, I would be able to contribute significantly.
I hereby declared all the information given above is correct to best of my knowledge.
