    MS Library and Information Science


    With the emergence of knowledge-centered economy and the knowledge society, information & ?knowledge management has emerged as a major area of study and importance to large corporate ?houses, R & D Institutions and Governments. The area cuts across several disciplines including ?information technology, library science, and management sciences, to mention a few. The ?Documentation Research & Training Centre (DRTC), a unit of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), ?founded by Prof. S. R. Ranganathan is an internationally recognized centre for advanced training and ?research in Library and Information Science. The DRTC offers a M.S. Programme in Library & ?Information Science with the primary objective of preparing the next generation information managers. ?This unique programme offers an ideal blend of courses spanning library science, information ?technology, knowledge management and quantitative studies. The graduates of the programme will find ?excellent openings in industry, especially the IT industry, R & D organizations and institutions of higher ?education & research. For those with an aptitude for higher studies and research, the M.S. Programme ?provides a good foundation for Ph.D. programmes. ?

    Scope and Objectives

    This is an advanced programme in Library and Information Science with special emphasis on ?applications of Information Technology. On completion of the programme, the students will be able to ?pursue an academic career or take up responsible positions in various private and public sector ?organizations in Library and Information field. The objectives of the course are to develop manpower ?capable of :?

    * Effectively and efficiently working as information professionals at higher levels in ?libraries and information centres.?
    * Design and developing information systems.?
    * Contributing to the discipline of Library and Information Science in terms of research and ?teaching.

    Eligibility

    The minimum qualification for admission to the M.S. programme is a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline ?from a recognized Indian or foreign university (obtained after a minimum of 12+3 years of education) ?with at least 60% marks in the qualifying examination.?

    Selection Procedure


    Selection of candidates for the M.S. programme will be based on academic records and performance ?of the candidate in an all-India written entrance test and interview. There is no tuition fee for the ?programme and all eligible students will receive a stipend. ?

    Duration


    The duration of the programme is 24 months (2 Years); the programme is offered only at the ISI ?Bangalore Centre

    Course Structure

    The two-year programme consists of a total of twenty credit-courses distributed over four semesters. ?These include colloquium, seminar and dissertation work. In addition, there are two courses in ?Elementary Mathematics (each carrying four credits) in the first and second semesters for those who ?have not studied mathematics at the plus two level.?

    The dissertation work on an approved topic will be spread over the 3rd and 4th semesters. Evaluation ?of the dissertation will be based on

    1. the contribution by the student (original contribution or ?some developmental work),
    2. the text of the dissertation itself
    3. presentation in an open seminar ??(defense) and
    4. depth of knowledge in the area.?
