    ACADEMIC PROJECT :
Relay Coordination & Demand Side Management (CARRIED OUT AT HAL)
The objective of protective relay coordination in an interconnected power system is to achieve selectivity without sacrificing sensitivity and fast fault clearance time. Relay protection coordination means that downstream devices should activate before upstream devices. This minimizes the portion of the system affected by a fault or other disturbances. At the substation level, feeder breakers should trip before the main breaker. Likewise, downstream panel breaker should trip before the substation feeder supplying the panel. The power starts from Main Receiving Station and goes through all divisions of HAL. If any fault occurs in any substation in any division, the breaker at Main Receiving Station trips. Therefore, it causes interrupts in power in power supply to the entire division. Therefore, to overcome this problem we will design relay operating time based on Conventional method of Relay Coordination Technique such that any fault in any substation should trip that breaker only.
HAL has a load factor of about 0.6 per day with a maximum demand of 19000KVA.We have to analyze the daily and monthly load pattern for HAL. With the fair bit of idea of the types of loads that HAL uses, we have suggested ideas to decrease load, improve power factor and if possible shifting loads to off peak periods. And this if implemented would result in improved load factor and hence reduce the electricity bills of HAL.
