ACADAMIC PROJECT
Description :
Project Name : Overload Detection and Control of a Subsystem (OVDC)
Environment : x86 Debian Linux PC Kernel 2.6.18 AMD64

This overload control subsystem is responsible to detect an overload condition and to control corresponding appropriate defense actions for every process in the system. To achieve this we use 3 modules. Those are OVD (Overload Detection), OVC (Overload Control) and OVC_DB (Overload Control Database).

OVD lists list of processes and each process details by using the command ps. By using PID of a process it reads required values (giffies) from /proc/PID/stat file system. The same information along with PID will be forwarded to OVC over IPC i.e. PIPES.
In OVC, first stores the details of jiffies in OVC_DB, after that finds the difference between present giffies and previous giffies (CPU Occupancy).

If the difference (CPU Occupancy) crosses the pre defined threshold value, it treats the process causing overload CPU occupancy. At this point OVC take the necessary actions based on the amount of CPU occupancy of each process.
