Title : Food grains Distribution in India using Rail and Road Network.
Brief description :
Using rail network for food grain distribution most cost effective. However due to uncertainty associated with rakes and wagon availability – the distribution plans have poor service level record (based only on rail).
In this work we suggest railways develop freight terminals (to be used for food grain transport) to effectively use rail and road network. Cost may go up but will ensure good service levels to customers of public distribution system (PDS) (or the ration shops). The research problem is about locating freight terminals for railways so that overall cost of distribution (a rail and road network) and location cost (for freight terminals) is minimized for a grain service level to customers of PDS.
- To procure, store and distribute food grains throughout the country while giving effective price support to farmers and to maintain satisfactory level of buffer stocks to ensure National Food Security.
- In order to improve the efficiency of the existing processes, FCI is going to appoint consultant for conducting a study to assess the existing process and to suggest an improved system design for revamping the supply-chain management in the corporation.
